Oscar

MyhearthammersasI follow my mate out into the backyard. I know what she wants, and I can’t do it. Part of me trusts that she knows what she’s doing as my Alpha. That’s the part that lets her lead me out to the woods beyond the property. The other part hates this plan and wants to run back to the mansion and lock all the doors.

The dream flashes through my head, and my head starts to spin.

It’s not dark yet. The moon isn’t showing.

Still, my skin itches.

My wolf wants out.

I stop walking. Cheryl moves to face me, her gaze fixed on mine.

“I won’t let anything bad happen to you, Oscar. Trust me.”

Laughter escapes me. She doesn’t get it.

“I’m not worried about me,” I tell her.

She blinks at me, and her dark lips part, but she doesn’t say another word.

“I think there’s a reason I’m not fully connected to my wolf,” I admit. “He’s not stable.”

She purses her lips. Takes a few seconds before she responds. “I can put you in a circle. You’ll be safe to change without any risk to either of us. It’ll let me assess what’s going on with your wolf.”

“Assess, how?” I ask, wondering what she means.

“There are spells I can use to check on your wolf.”

“I don’t… Wait. You think I’m under a spell?”

“It’s a possibility,” she says, though she doesn’t sound convinced.

“If it’s not a spell…”

“I can check if he’s stable, and if he isn’t, I can figure out why.”

I blink at her. “What?”

It sounds too good to be true.

“You can really do that?” I ask.

She nods. “It shouldn’t take long, but you’ll have to shift for me.”

She’s serious. I can’t believe it. Could it really be this simple?

I’m speechless as she draws me a wry smile. “Do you think you can shift for me?”

“For you,” I tell her, “I’ll shift. Once you’re sure it’s safe.”

“Good,” she says. “Now, take a couple steps back so I can put you in a circle big enough for your wolf.”

I do what I’m told, watching my mate put me in circle. I should have spoken to her before now. Should have admitted what was wrong. I only made things worse hiding the truth from her.

I won’t do that again.

She tells me when the circle is sealed. Asks me to shift for her.
