I strip out of my academy clothes and ignore the hint of dread I feel when I start to shift.

No one’s going to get hurt tonight. This is safe. I trust my mate’s magic.

I give up control to my wolf, letting him take me over completely.

My last glimpse of Cheryl is before I put my head down to finish shifting forms.

Chapter Fifteen

Cheryl

OscarseemsstunnedwhenI reveal my plan. Lost for words. I don’t waste time checking if he’s okay. He’s not. That much is obvious to me now. I need to concentrate on solving his problem. I need to find out what’s causing his blackouts and eliminating the most likely options seems like the fastest way to get to the real issue.

Once the circle is sealed, my mate strips out of his clothing quickly and he practically curls into a ball when I ask him to shift forms.

His wolf emerges with a light growl, glowing golden eyes looking me over suspiciously before he bares his teeth for a more vicious expression of his mood. He knows he’s caged. Trapped by magic.

“If you weren’t making my mate blackout, we wouldn’t be in this situation,” I chide him.

He makes an irritable noise and starts to pace in the circle. He recognizes me as an Alpha.

I don’t feel the presence of a spell working on him, and a feral wolf wouldn’t seem so grudgingly accepting in this situation. I’ll cast to confirm my suspicions, but I don’t think Oscar’s going to be happy with my assessment once he knows what the problem is.

I draw earth magic from the closest tree, replenishing my resources before starting to cast. Freya’s energy surrounds us out in the open. I can feel it all around us. It makes my fingers tingle as I draw it into me to be used to cast.

The intake of power makes me a little light-headed. Using magic like this is still new to me. I was a quarter witch before, unable to draw enough power to do more than create basic charms. More reliant on the magical energy in the raw ingredients than in my own talents.

Now that I’m part of a coven, everything is different.

Even if we can only realistically meet up once every few weeks, we still get all the benefits that come with being sister witches. I’m glad Rachel asked me to be a part of her coven. I always knew she was destined for greatness. She’s a natural leader.

I never saw myself that same way, yet here I am.

The father I never knew was a wolf shifter, not a human like my mother told me. I was a hidden Alpha until I got to Lunar Academy and things started to click into place, piece by piece.

I cast my spells while Oscar’s wolf grows restless trapped in his sealed circle.

He wants to run. It’s instinctive. He’s full of energy he wants to release.

Usually that wouldn’t be a problem, but I can’t let him have what he wants tonight.

When I’m done with my spells, I use an Alpha command to have my mate shift back to his human form. Since I can’t let his wolf have the release he wants, it’s the simplest way to bring Oscar back out from under his wolf’s control.

I don’t break the circle until my mate is standing in front of me, his questioning gaze fixed on my face.

“Well?” he asks, his voice shaking lightly. “Do we have a verdict?”

There’s no use pretending I didn’t eliminate all the external options, so I nod slowly.

I won’t lie to him, even if it’s painful for both of us.

“You’re not under a spell, and your wolf isn’t feral. He’s stable, he recognized me as an Alpha.”

He frowns at me, hugging himself. “Then, what is it? What’s wrong with me?”

“It isn’t a supernatural problem,” I reveal, as I break the circle. “You’re blocking your wolf for another reason. We need to work out what that reason is so you can connect properly and stop blacking out.”
