If maybe they’re outside dealing with the trouble that found Oscar in the woods.

“You’re being paranoid,” I mutter to myself, as I turn the phone on.

Chances are they went to Noah’s room at the academy to stay true to their word to leave us alone for the night. I scroll through the list of messages received since school finished and I left my phone in the bag, switched off.

I find unread messages from Vi and Ivy confirming they’re staying on campus tonight. Telling us to have a good night with the house all to ourselves.

There’s nothing from Everett, which isn’t unusual.

Noah’s last message came in at midnight. A long line of kisses.

The one right before it confirms they went back to his room.

I let out a relieved sigh as I dial Everett’s number.

It feels weird to be calling this late, but it’s not a normal situation.

The phone rings, and rings.

Everett’s an incredibly deep sleeper so I let it ring.

When it hits his voicemail message, I hang up and try again.

And again. “Come on, Everett. Pick up the phone.”

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Noah

Ugh.Everettmusthaveput an alarm on his phone. It’s fucking ringing, and ringing, and he’s not bothering to switch it off. I rub my eyes and push myself up onto my elbows. The sight of the dorm room in the dark disorients me a little. I’m so used to waking up in bed beside Cheryl that it takes a second to adjust to the change and realize the reason the ringing won’t stop is because Everett’s snoring his ass off on the twin bed by the door.

It’s a quarter past three in the morning. It’s not an alarm. Someone’s calling him. Shit.

I get up and head toward the source of the noise, finding the offending item on the carpet next to the bed. Cheryl’s picture’s flashing on the screen. I answer quickly, panic swelling over me.

“Cheryl, what’s wrong?” I ask, my heart pounding.

“I’m guessing Everett’s sleeping,” she says.

I can picture her wry smile as she talks.

“He is. I’m guessing you’re not just calling to check if we’re awake?”

She sighs. “No. Oscar blacked out tonight. I woke up and brought him back inside, but we’ve got a bigger problem now.”

“What kind of problem?” I ask.

She’s quiet for a few seconds before she answers. “Is Everett still asleep?”

I look down. He hasn’t moved a muscle. Despite the fact that I’m standing over him, talking at a normal volume to our mate on his phone. “He’s still asleep.”

“I’ll tell you both the full story when you get here. You can’t tell Everett, but there are shifters in our woods. I don’t know what they’re doing out there. Get ready for an ambush, but don’t go looking for them unless they initiate it. We need to talk first. Okay?”

“That’s not okay,” I tell her, lowering my voice. “Everett should know.”

“If he knows, you think he’ll come find out what happened first?” she asks.

“No. He’ll go homicidal.”
