“Right. So, don’t tell him.”

“I don’t know…” I murmur, knowing she’s right, but not seeing what’s wrong with it.

If shifters have invaded our territory, Everett has every right to go homicidal.

Pack law would protect whatever he did to them.

“There’s no immediate danger,” Cheryl tells me. “Something really weird just happened that we need to talk about. Noah, I don’t think the wolves are from the academy, and I don’t think they care about pack law. We need to be careful.”

“Fuck,” I curse. “Right. I’ll need to wake Everett up. It might be a minute. It might take fifteen minutes to get back, even if we’re fast. Will you be okay for that long?”

“That’s fine,” she says. “I’ll see you then.”

She hangs up and I sigh as I look down at our sleeping Alpha. He’s cranky enough at the best of times. Waking him while it’s still dark is like announcing a death wish.

“Everett,” I start trying at my usual volume, shaking him by the shoulder.

He barely moves. He’s out cold. Dead to the world.

I give up for the moment, putting his phone down and getting fully dressed before I go back to shaking him and nagging him to wake up. It takes almost five minutes to shake him awake.

He could sleep through an earthquake. If it was a real emergency I’d bite him, with wolf-sharpened teeth. He might kill me, but he’d have to catch me first.

“What the hell, Noah?” he grumbles as he turns to stare at me.

“Cheryl needs us back at the house,” I tell him, thrusting his phone at him.

He looks at it and back at me, before he sits up. “Cheryl called? What happened?”

I shrug, feeling vaguely guilty about not telling him everything, but knowing Cheryl’s right in this situation means I can’t do it. Getting into a fight with a pack we know nothing about would be crazy.

“She said they’re not in immediate danger, but we need to get back home. Now.”

“Leave the books,” he tells me. “We can get them later.”

He slept in his clothes on top of the covers, so he just hauls on his shoes as I go unlock the door.

He storms past me, and I let him lead the way back to the mansion, while I catch up, and keep a watchful eye out for potential threats.

Chapter Thirty

Everett

Iknewweshouldn’thave left them alone all night. Something’s seriously wrong with Oscar. I should have been able to help him. I shouldn’t have left that on Cheryl’s shoulders. If anything happened to either of them because I couldn’t find a solution to Oscar’s blackouts, I’m never going to forgive myself. My hands roll into fists as I march toward the mansion.

I’m never leaving them alone like this again.

They’re my pack to protect. Alpha or not, Cheryl’s mine to protect.

I rush up the porch steps to the front door and almost drop my keys in my haste to get inside.

I pass the keys to Noah and step inside the brightly lit hallway.

My mate’s sitting at the top of the stairs, waiting for us.

I move toward her, and she puts a finger to her lips.

She wants us to be quiet. She gives me a tired smile when I resist the urge to ask what’s wrong from half-way up the stairs. Oscar must be sleeping. She doesn’t want us to wake him up.
