Chapter Forty-Five

Cheryl

Thehazeoflustthat descends over me when Oscar kisses me is unstoppable. My heat awakens and my decision-making capabilities are instantly skewed. I want nothing more than to strip out of my clothes and demand more from his probing tongue and grasping fingers.

A vague warning moves through me as I catch my breath and try to decide what demands I should make first. It takes a second to remember we’re up so damn early for an important reason.

I need to leave the room. Oscar’s licking my fluids off his fingers, and I can feel Everett’s eyes on us.

One more second in here, and I’ll forget everything else to lose myself to the heat.

We all will.

I grab a fresh pair of panties and get out, heading straight down to the bathroom across from the kitchen. I get cleaned up and put on my make-up. My hair is completely wet, and apparently replenishing my magic yesterday before I passed out for half a day wasn’t enough to allow me to perform the simple spell to quick-dry my wavy style.

I towel dry it a little more before I leave the bathroom. I get my favourite boots from the shoe closet next to the bathroom and I take them to the kitchen to put them on.

Vi and Ivy are still in the kitchen when I step back into the room.

The coffee smell is stronger now, and Ivy’s anxiously tapping her fingers on the table.

She’s a little hopped up. I’ve seen her like this when she has a test at the academy.

I’m still getting my boots laced when the doorbell rings.

“That should be Rachel,” I tell them.

“I’ll get it!” Ivy tells me, getting up like a shot and darting out of the room.

I look at Vi. She shrugs. “I tried to switch her to decaf. She noticed and made more.”

She’s worried about her mate, and I know she’s worried about Oscar too.

“I think you two should stay here when the other pack arrive.”

She frowns. “What?”

“If this has been about Oscar being an Omega, the spell might not be the end of it.”

Oh, Goddess. I can’t believe I didn’t consider that before. If they want Oscar because he’s an Omega, they might look for another way to capture him when this one doesn’t pan out.

“Oh, Artemis,” Vi murmurs. “You think they don’t know about me?”

Do I? No. No, I don’t think that at all.

We know this wasn’t completely opportunistic. Those wolves were on our territory. They had to know that. Everyone in town knows who we are. They know we have two Alphas, and two Omegas. It’s a rare enough situation that the news would have spread to other towns.

Who the hell knows how long they’ve been waiting for this chance?

“I think we need to be careful,” I tell Vi. “I don’t want to put you at risk.”

She looks crestfallen. “I know we don’t spend tons of time together as a pack, but I thought we’d be able to support Oscar today.”

Her words sink deep.We don’t spend that much time together as a pack.

I spend time with Vi and Ivy at school, and Oscar spends some time with them at home, but other than that we’re usually apart. They don’t shift with us, and we don’t shift with them. Goddess, how could I not realize that? I’ve been failing us as a pack, keeping my mates separate from my friends.

“Oscar knows you support him,” I tell her, finishing my laces and taking her hand across the table. “And I know we’ve been a little fractured, but that’s on me. I’ll fix it. I promise.”
