What the hell is going on inside my brain, anyway?

Why is she the one sent to torture me like this?

“That’s what you think,” she says, in a sing-song voice. “Twelve hours, and you just let the first one get away. Tick, tock, Oscar.”

I could ignore her, like I ignored my wolf for so damned long until he started stealing control of my body from me to shift. Or I could ignore my reluctance to talk to her and find out what she thinks she knows. She already knew I killed that girl before I knew it. She could be a manifestation of my wolf.

“Fine. What do you know?”

“Not how it works. I need your help, first.”

“I don’t have time for this,” I remind her.

She rolls her eyes. “Fine. I’ll give you one little freebie, and that’s it.”

“I need to know something that will stop them.”

“Stop them?” she asks, snorting. “You can’t stop them. Look at what you did. No. That’s completely out of the question. I’ll tell you what I can give you, and I’ll tell you more once you help me.”

It’s a crappy deal, but it’s one I’m making with myself, so what the hell?

“I’m in.”

She grins at me. “You’ve been to that field you keep dreaming about. You’ll be going there again soon. You’ll understand everything then.”

Why does that make me want to shudder. “That feels like a threat.”

“It’s really more of a promise.”

“Thanks for that.”

“Now, I need you to speak to your mate’s witch friend Rachel. She has a mate who can help spirits,” Bianca starts, chatting away excitedly while I zone out like I used to whenever she was talking about clothes or bitching about her so-called friends.

I don’t need to remember it.

None of this is real. It’s all a dream.

Chapter Fifty-Five

Noah

Takingasix-hour-roundroadtrip with a stranger isn’t exactly my idea of fun, but nothing that’s happened today has been anything close to pleasant. Compared to what Oscar’s going through, this is nothing. I hope to hell we find a way to keep him with us. From what I’ve learned at the academy, I know appeals are unusual in this kind of case, but they do happen, and rulings can be altered.

We have a chance, no matter how slim.

I unlock the doors and get into the driver’s seat with a hint of trepidation. It’s been a while since I drove. It’s not something we need to do unless we’re leaving town, and then usually Everett gets behind the wheel. It’s been months since I sat in this chair.

I adjust the seat and the mirror while Rachel gets in the passenger side.

“Bet this isn’t how you expected to be spending your day.” I start to babble nervously the instant she’s in the enclosed space with me, not sure why I sound like I used to when I was fifteen years old and attempting to start talking to girls. It’s weird because this is nothing like that.

Rachel’s my mate’s best friend, not a girl I might be attracted to. She seems nice, I guess, but I’ve barely spent any time around her. I watch her close the door, trying to think of something less awkward to talk about.

All I can think is I’m glad she has blue streaks in her hair. Blonde women remind me of my ex, and any reminders of her make me feel stupid. I came way too close to losing everything when a girl who never really cared about me walked away. Kind of impossible not to feel like an idiot after that, especially after I met Cheryl and discovered the difference between fated mates and chosen ones.

“Well, I didn’t think I’d be cutting class today, but this is important,” Rachel says. She puts her seatbelt on, and I realize I’ve forgotten about mine. “Hopefully we find out something useful.”

“We’d better,” I tell her. I put on my seatbelt and switch on the Sat NAV. “It’s a long way to go for no reward.”
