Chapter Sixty-Nine

Rachel

TheDarkLordiscoming. The church bells are a sign, the sinking house confirms it. I can’t believe the horror stories from the school yard were true. I thought they were exaggerated to make sure little witches were afraid of the dark arts. Turns out, so far, it’s all true.

We’re in real trouble now.

Heading to the third floor, and then the attic, I know that this is probably where those demonic spirits were trying to take me before Adrian stopped them. It must be where the necromancer is. Facing her without a necromancer of our own will be dangerous.

We don’t have a choice. It’s our only shot at survival.

“It was the necromancer who made the deal with the Dark Lord, right?” Adrian asks.

“Right,” I say, remembering that was how Paul put it when he told me.

Typically, someone who’s soul is already owned can’t make their own deal with their captor.

“What happens if we kill her?”

“Depends on when it happens,” I tell him. “If we kill her before she can kill us, her soul will be forfeit like Paul’s was. If she kills us first, then we leave two very dangerous ghosts behind when the Dark Lord claims our souls.”

“Sara!” Silas exclaims when we reach the attic staircase.

She puts a finger in front of her lips, and we all wait quietly for her to tell us what’s going on.

“We’re in the attic,” she whispers. “Your backup just arrived before the house sank. Wait for them before you come up. I was summoned up there, that’s why I couldn’t help you get Rachel away from those two demons.”

“Your father …” Silas starts.

“He’s in the attic, too.”

“What about …” I start.

She shakes her head. “The doorway is there now, but the Dark Lord will take his time. He wants what she offered him, and he will not be pleased if he doesn’t get it. I have to go. Good luck.”

She fades out, and Silas breathes out a sigh.

“She said our back up is here,” Adrian says.

“There’s still only one necromancer in the house,” I tell him. “But there are now three witch/wolf hybrids, and four wolves.”

“Four wolves?” Adrian asks.

“It’s not like I can tell who it is,” I murmur. I have a few guesses, but I could be wrong.

The forest around us starts to creep me out. The illusion is ruined in a few places by mud spilling out from rooms that must have had open doors when the house started sinking.

“Why does this place still look like the woods?” I ask, shivering in spite of how warm I am in Silas’ hoody.

My mates look at each other. Clearly, they don’t want to answer that.

“You know, and you don’t want to tell me?”

“Wesuspect,” Silas corrects me.

“I should go look for them,” Adrian says, starting to walk past us.

I grab his arm. “What? No. What do you mean, them?”
