There’s definite tension in the room. I haven’t been physical with any of my mates in days and they’re all showing signs of missing that intimacy. I’ve missed them, too, but I know I’m not all the way ready for that kind of attention right now.

Silas puts his attention on his plate, and I do the same, knowing the food will help me to feel better faster. The physical effects of using a ton of magic in a short space of time are pretty similar to recovering from sickness. Food, drink and rest are the main ways to help my body recover. Replenishing my magic will help, too, but really that’s a secondary concern.

I take small bites of my food, not sure exactly what it is that’s making the bacon taste so incredible, and not caring as long as it always tastes like this.

“This is so good,” I tell Silas.

“Mmm,” Carter agrees with his mouth full.

“It’s okay,” Adrian grumbles, clearly not impressed.

Our Alpha preferred the old cooking style of our Beta, which basically consisted of quickly frying up a massive pile of meat at every mealtime. No added seasoning, no veggies or salad. Minimal carbs.

He’s crazy not to love this incredible breakfast-for-lunch meal.

The meat is delicious. Whatever seasoning Silas added is perfect.

The mushrooms, tomatoes and egg are just as good and make it more balanced.

Carter’s plate is almost empty already, and Silas is making quick work of his, too.

I feel full before I’m anywhere close to finished, probably because I’m a little weak.

Looking at what’s left on the plate, I can’t believe I’m leaving half my food unfinished.

I’m so done with feeling sick and tired.

Setting down my water, I get to my feet.

“I need to go out back for a second.”

I don’t wait for my mates to be okay with it, and I move swiftly enough that Adrian doesn’t get a chance to get up and carry me out there like I’m an invalid. My fingers are tingling at the thought of replenishing my magic properly. I need to go outside.

My hands fumble with the keys that we always leave in the lock. I almost drop them before I manage to get the door unlocked. A bigger hand reaches for the handle before I do, and I can feel Silas behind me, as he scoops me back and opens the door inward.

He feels so good up close that I kind of want to pass out in his arms.

My tingling fingers are the only things that stop me.

“Easy,” Silas murmurs, lifting me over the threshold and carrying me to the far corner of the yard, the part closest to the little strip of forest beyond.

He sets me down on the grass and I sink to my knees, palms splayed on either side of me as my fingers reach the earth. I close my eyes as a rush of magic washes slowly over my body, trailing up my hands into my arms and beyond.

“Wow,” Silas breathes.

I open my eyes to watch as he sits down across from me, his gaze following the barely visible glittering trail of magic as it fills me. I can feel my energy changing, my strength coming back.

Goddess, it feels good.

It feels so good I don’t want it to end.

The rush starts to fade suddenly, my power source apparently deciding I’ve had enough. My energy dips and rises a few times before I’m cut off completely.

My head starts to pound, and I shut my eyes tightly, gasping in pain as I try to get past the feeling.

“Shit. Rachel, are you okay?” Silas sounds far away, like he’s in another room, shouting through a closed door.

I can’t answer him. The pain is too strong.
