Oh, Goddess. I got greedy. I tried to absorb more magic than I could hold.

Freya, forgive me. I wasn’t thinking straight. I won’t try to take more than I can handle again.

I stand up to break the extended skin contact with the ground. It helps with the headache, but I’m unsteady on my unfortunately bared feet. Luckily one of my mates is right there to catch me when I stumble.

Silas gives me a worried look. “What happened?”

“Sleep,” I murmur, my eyes already closing.

“What happened?”

Hey, that’s Adrian’s voice now.

“I don’t know,” Silas tells him. “She was replenishing her magic, and then it looked like she was in pain, and I think she’s about to pass out.”

Adrian sighs. “She needs time to heal. She probably tried to juice up too fast.”

“It looked like it was helping her, until this.”

“I’ll supervise the next time.”

Sounds like my Alpha’s getting ready to boss me around.

Kind of makes me wish I wasn’t so close to passing the hell out.

Chapter Eight

Silas

AdriantakesRacheloutof my arms and carries her back into the house. I follow him inside because Sara’s lurking around again, making me suspicious. She doesn’t try to speak to me, but I can feel her stare burning through me. I avoid making eye-contact as I walk back into the house, only giving her a cursory glance as I shut the door.

Whatever happened out there, it had nothing to do with Sara.

At least, it didn’t seem like it did.

Christ. That’s the last thing we need.

Malevolent spirits with grudges are one of the hardest things to deal with. They don’t bend to commands like normal ghosts do. They’re almost impossible to get rid of.

I sigh as I lock the door.

“What happened to Rachel?” Carter asks in a vaguely accusatory tone.

“She tried to absorb too much magic at once,” I tell him, moving away from the door.

I need to know why Sara wants me to look at my aunt’s old high school yearbook. It feels like a bad idea, but it’s better than waiting around for the shit to hit the fan. She’s not going away until she gets what she wants, or I banish her for trying to cause harm to our mate. Considering I’m not very experienced at banishing spirits, I’m hoping what she wants isn’t going to be an impossible task.

I move past Carter to the living room, sighing softly when he starts to follow me. Adrian must have ordered him not to follow him upstairs with our mate, so now he’s going to bug the living crap out of me instead.Great.

“I thought replenishing her magic was supposed to make her feel better, not worse?” he asks.

“It is,” I admit.

“So, what happened?”

I get to the dresser and open the drawer, ignoring Carter’s repetitive question. The yearbooks are right where I left them. I don’t know how Sara knew about them, but considering she can read my mind, I can hazard a guess. I take them out and shut the drawer, fully intending to take them upstairs where I can close my bedroom door in Carter’s nosy face.

“The ghost can read your mind?” he asks. “Wait. She was out there when Rachel passed out?”
