“I knew my mom was an asshole,” she tells me. “I knew before she left. I stopped caring about her when I realized she didn’t care about me. I’m just happy you two get to be family now.”

“Thank you,” I tell her. “You never gave up. I wish we could have had more time together.”

“We’ve had the right amount of time, trust me.” She steps back. “I’m ready to go. I just need a little help. Will you both give me a push?”

I look at Sam. He has tears in his eyes.

Sara was his world, and now she’s leaving.

I can’t even imagine what that must feel like.

“Goodbye, my angel,” he whispers.

I feel him releasing her, allowing her to move along to her afterlife.

“Bye, little sister,” I say, feeling my voice crack.

I didn’t know her for long, but she had a good heart.

I release her, and she smiles before her image fades, a flash of pure white light taking her spirit away from us. She’s gone from this earth now. Beyond our reach.

Our dad lets out a choked sob, and I fight back the lump that’s trying to lodge itself in my throat as I comfort him. Sara’s gone now, but she did it her way and I won’t let her down.

Chapter Seventy-Six

Rachel

Ahalfdozenwitchesshow up within a half hour. Turns out, being the sole surivors of a Dark Lord’s visit has warranted extra spells to document what happened and figure out why the ruler of hell left so many souls untouched when he easily could have taken us all.

Mabel Waters is one of those witches, and unsurprisingly, being fate touched, she’s in charge.

“So, you asked him not to take the soul of the ghost who was with you?” she asks, raising her eyebrows at me. “And he just complied?”

“Well, I argued that she was nothing to do with Dorothea’s collection of souls for him. I told him she died at the hands of his worshippers, but that she was never sacrificed to him.”

“Interesting,” she says. “It’s possible that he was in a congenial mood. It’s also possible the timing helped you out.”

“The timing?”

“It’s a new year,” she says. “Some say the new year makes him uncharacteristically generous. Of course, this is the first example we have in recent years of that generosity. Either way, you all had an incredibly lucky break.”

“I know. What happens now?” I ask her.

“We’ll take statements from all of you and confirm what happened with a few spells. I know your coven sisters had to leave, and we can speak to them in the morning.”

“What about the other thing?” I ask, kind of nervous after confessing what happened six months ago with Paul, before his psycho ex did all of this to try and send me and my mates to hell.

“Ah, yes. Paul Winter’s death. I understand you disposed of the body permanently?”

I nod. “It was a complicated situation. Human police were coming out to investigate the cabin after we Silas was approached by the spirits of several girls who were killed out in that forest. Pack law covered us, and he did try to kill me, but we couldn’t risk leaving him there to be found.”

“I understand. If you’d like, we can go to that spot now and confirm what you’ve told me.”

“Uh, Sure,” I tell her, feeling a little freaked out at the thought of it.

“I understand your trepidation, especially after what happened with your friend’s past projection, but The Fates worked with me to update that spell so it’s completely accurate and it actively identifies any false information. Additionally …”

“Uh huh,” I murmur, zoning out as she goes on with her assurances.
