“You’ll understand when you see what it is,” Silas says. “Everything else can wait for tomorrow.”

“I’ll give you your gift tonight, too,” I tell him, not liking the idea of receiving without giving.

“Sure, sure. You too go have your own early Christmas. The rest of us can sit here and eat carrots like the sad rabbits we are,” Carter grumbles.

“Stop being dramatic,” Adrian tells him. “You know there’s cake.”

“The cake is off limits.”

Adrian shoots Silas a frown. “What?”

Silas groans. “It’s not off limits. I was just trying to stop Carter from eating the whole thing before I got the chance to serve it for dessert tonight.”

“I wasn’t going to eat the whole thing.”

“Because you do nothing to excess?” Silas asks.

“Don’t act like you don’t love me,” Carter says.

Silas shakes his head. “Youcouldmake it a little easier.”

“Same back.” Carter’s smiling, so he’s not actually bothered.

Silas doesn’t seem bothered, either. He isn’t irritated by our Omega’s antics tonight. They’ve always had little clashes that I put down to their personalities, but it feels like something’s changed. It’s not a huge difference. Anyone listening to them would probably think they’re bickering like usual, but I detect a hint of warmth in their exchange that wasn’t there before.

Maybe they’re getting into the Christmas spirit.

Whatever it is, I hope it lasts beyond tonight.

“Okay,” Carter says, setting down his silverware on his plate. “I’m ready for cake.”

Adrian rolls his eyes. “I’m not done with the roast, but everyone else go ahead if you’re finished.”

Our Alpha looks like he could quite happily finish what’s left of the meat all by himself. He doesn’t care about dessert. I take the last bite of my meat on my plate and decide if I eat any more my dress is in danger of becoming too tight to remove. “I’m finished, thanks.”

Carter gives me a knowing smile and I can tell he’s read my mind before he opens his mouth.

“Don’t worry about the dress. We’ll find a way to get you out of it,” he says, winking at me.

“Did I tell you I missed you?” I ask, leaning in to kiss his cheek.

“I don’t think you did,” he says, “but you can always make it up to me.”

“Later,” Adrian interjects, which is probably just as well considering Carter’s leaning closer as if he’s about to kiss me. If I let it happen, it’ll be the kind of kiss that completely changes our plans.

“Later,” I echo our Alpha, softening it with, “I promise.”

Carter gives me a wry smile. “I’ll hold you to it.”

Silas gets to his feet. “I’ll make the frosting.”

“I’ll clear the plates,” Carter says.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Silas

AsmuchasIwant Rachel all to myself tonight, I’m full of nervous energy when dinner’s over and it’s time to reveal my gift to her. I didn’t doubt my choice when I called the owner, and I didn’t stop to think about it when I started spending my free time fixing the place up, but now that it’s time to take Rachel? Yeah, I’m starting to freak out.
