As a show of good faith, I pass him the keys.

He fumbles and drops them.

I hear him cursing as he gets up and spins around, crouching to pick them up.

Walking past, I head into the back office just past the kitchen, in the furthest corner of the bar.

I kick the door open and set the tray with the envelope on top of the small desk.

The safe’s on the floor behind the desk, and the lock is awkward as hell.

Putting in the combination and waiting to see if the mechanism will decide to unlock, I keep my hand on the handle. The clunking sound a second later tells me it’s playing ball today. I open the door and reach for the tray with my other hand.

And that’s when the lights go out.

It’s suddenly pitch dark in the enclosed office, and I manage to smack myself in the shoulder with the tray and let go of the safe door. I hear the locking mechanism clunking again, and I know I’ll have to re-enter the combination. In the dark.

“I got the lights!” Carter yells from the other room.

I shake my head as I straighten, putting the tray down on top of the safe.

My shifter enhanced sight comes out when I focus on what’s right in front of me and my vision starts to glow. I re-enter the combination twice before it opens this time. I slide the drawer inside and close the door.

Leaving the room, I find Carter waiting at the front door, keys in the slot and hand ready to turn the handle. His eyes are glowing in the darkness like mine are.

“Now, can we go home?”

I nod, and he opens the door.

I catch a glimpse of a spectral figure outside before it disappears.

Why do I get the feeling that ignoring Sara isn’t going to make her go away?

“You okay?” Carter asks as we step outside into the cool winter breeze.

“I’m fine.” At least, I will be.

As soon as I’ve figured out what Sara wants from me.

Chapter Four

Carter

Ilockthedoorto the bar and pass Silas the keys. He takes them wordlessly and moves them around in his palm, his thoughts still on the girl who visited him in the bar tonight. He’s wearing a frown as we start the walk home. He doesn’t like that the ghost is being cagey. It’s making him paranoid.

Not that our tall, dark and moody Beta is usually easy-going. His special ability doesn’t exactly lend well to a relaxing lifestyle. People aren’t at their friendliest when they’re dead.

“How ‘bout we go knock Amanda’s door and ask for a teleport to our mate?” I ask.

Silas snorts, turning back to give me a look of disbelief. “You’re kidding, right?”

Not really.“Yeah, sure. I’m kidding.”

Maybe I’ll just steal his car keys and sneak out once he’s holed up in his room. I’m sure Rachel will be happy to see me. When I eventually get to her, in like twelve hours.

I let out a sigh. It would be crazy to drive out there, and I know it.

So, I’ll just go home so I can lay in bed staring at the ceiling until the sun comes up.
