Then, I’ll probably have to talk myself out of going out to ask Rachel’s coven mate to send me to her.

And so it’ll go until my mate is back home in Wolf Creek where she belongs.

I glance back at Silas when we get to the house. He’s far enough away that his thoughts aren’t blaring at me, which is probably exactly why his pace has been so slow compared to mine. I don’t need to be able to read his mind to know he’s still worrying about what that ghost girl wants.

He’ll feel better once we’re inside, where restless spirits can’t get to him.

“Maybe we should ask Rachel to make you another one of those charms,” I suggest, as if the thought hasn’t already crossed his mind tonight. I wait for him on the porch, because, as usual, I’ve forgotten my keys and Adrian’s locked the door. I don’t know why he bothers. We don’t have anything worth stealing. At least, we don’t when Rachel’s not around.

Silas gives me a sour glance as he gets to the porch. “Stay out of my head, Carter.”

“Can I help it if your thoughts jump out at me?” I counter, shrugging limply.

I’m really not in the mood for an argument, but I’ll never not defend myself when someone acts like I’m being an asshole.Sure, I could pretend I don’t hear anything, but wouldn’t that be worse?

He unlocks the door, muttering under his breath quietly.

Pushing the door open, I slip under his arm and dart inside before he can take a step forward.

The instant I breathe in, I know she’s home.

Smiling, I dash up the stairs and open the door to the room she shares with Adrian.

Our Alpha looks up from the bed, scowling at me.

Rachel’s sleeping next to him, still at least partially clothed from what I can see.

I take a step into the room and Adrian gets up from the bed, moving fast enough to become a blur before he stops directly in front of me.

“You’ll wake her up,” he whisper-growls at me. “She needs to rest.”

“Is she hurt?” I ask, glancing over his shoulder at her.

Her breathing is slow and calm. Her heartbeat seems normal.

“She’s exhausted.” He puts his hand on my chest and pushes.

I take the hint and back out of the room, with one last longing glance at our mate’s resting form.

He steps out and closes the door once we’re in the hallway, his gaze moving past me as the stairs creak with our Beta’s arrival. Adrian jerks his head toward my room, down the hall. We follow him to the spot outside the door and wait for our Alpha to let us know what’s going on.

Silas crosses his arms, his frown deepening as I glance his way.

He’s worried about Rachel now. All other concerns have been pushed out of his head.

“She’s drained,” Adrian tells us, no longer whispering and growly. He keeps his voice low, but all the muscles in his face are tight. He wasn’t happy when Rachel left to help her friend, and now that she’s come back worn out, he’s seriously pissed off. “Her wolf feels strong. She must have used too much magic.”

“She’ll need to sleep for a while then,” Silas says, some of the tension going out of his shoulders.

I can feel his relief that our mate is okay, and I can’t help wondering why Adrian looks like he wants to go out and murder someone. Rachel’s tired herself out from using powerful spells before. It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last.

I bite back on asking if that’s all. I know Adrian wouldn’t take it well.

“Did she say anything, or did she just get here and pass out?” I try instead, wanting to be sure he isn’t hiding something more worrying.

Adrian’s quite adept at keeping what he’s thinking to himself. He’s been making a conscious effort to keep me from getting into his head, and his determination has been paying off. If Silas knew, he’d be insanely jealous. There’s no way in hell I’m telling him.

“She spoke a little,” Adrian admits. “The plan worked.”
