Page 81 of Shifting Spirits

Adrian drinks his coffee quietly. He’s right about Rachel, but I can’t handle sitting around like this anymore. I get to my feet. I can at least try to do something about Sara’s disappearance. It’s better than sitting around feeling useless.

“I need to go speak to Dante.”

We already agreed that giving Rachel another problem isn’t a smart idea when she’s already trying to deal with something that’s causing her pain.

This is my problem to fix. I created it. I need to deal with it.

Adrian nods. “I hope he can help.”

“So do I,” I mutter.

If I can’t speak to Sara, my only other option is to go straight to our father.

It’s not a visit I want to have to make. I doubt I’ll be able to stomach talking to the man who chose to abandon me before I was even born. The thought of seeing him makes my fists clench.

I leave the house, only realizing after I’m out of there that I’ve left the charm in the kitchen.

It doesn’t matter. I don’t plan to be outside for long.

Sean’s garage isn’t far. The apartment Rachel’s friend Amanda lives in with her mates is above it, with the door located around back. It’s not the most inviting entrance after dark, which is probably good for discouraging visitors. Too bad it’s daylight, and I’m on a mission.

I get there without picking up any spirit trails, and I ring the bell hoping I’m not disturbing anything that might stop them from answering. I let my attention drift while I wait, taking in the back yard and the piles of tyres stacked in front of the storage shed, only looking back at the door when I hear the key turning in the lock.

Parker opens it and raises his eyebrows at me. “Silas. It’s been a while. What’s up?”

“I’m hoping Dante’s home,” I admit. “I need to ask if he can help me with something.”

“Dante?” he asks, sounding confused. “I’m pretty sure Rachel’s on his level with the whole magic thing.”

“She probably is. It’s more of a necromancer thing. His sister was a huge help with Cheryl’s problem recently. I hate to pester her, but I’ve run out of options.”

“Well, come in.” He steps back and I move past him.

He locks the door and I wait for him to lead the way in.

The staircase up to the apartment feels a bit narrow, but that could just be because there’s only one light and that’s above the entrance at the top. Parker unlocks that door and lets us into the apartment. It’s a big, open space with a kitchen area to the right as we walk in, a dining area with a bit of free floor space beyond, and a living room area further in with the biggest TV I’ve ever seen hanging on the wall between windows.

There’s an action flick on the screen, and Amanda mutes it when she looks over.

Rachel’s friend is a slightly shy girl with seriously long light brown hair.

She’s the same hybrid type as Rachel and her room is opposite Rachel’s in one of the girl’s academy dorms, but both prefer to spend their nights in the company of their mates, which I have no complaints about.

“Hey, Silas. How are you?” she asks.

“Hi, Amanda. I’m doing good, thanks. Are you having a good break?”

“It’s been fun,” she admits, before she frowns at her Omega mate.

Dante doesn’t look up. He grumbles something under his breath about missing the best part of the movie, and he attempts to stealthily steal the remote by distracting his mate with a misguided kiss.

She puts a hand on his chest and stops his plan in its tracks.

I guess she’s not so shy around her guys.

“Dante,” she murmurs. “We have a guest.”

She gets up and keeps the remote in her hand so he can’t put the sound back on.
