“Is Rachel okay?” she asks.

The concern in her eyes disconcerts me for a second. She doesn’t know. She just thinks Rachel’s more likely to come over here herself, and since she’s not the one standing here Amanda’s clearly wondering where she is.

I force a smile. “Yeah. Rachel’s fine. I thought I’d let her sleep in this morning. I had a favor to ask of Dante, actually.”

I glance at him. He hasn’t moved from his seat, he’s just turned to face us, his arms resting on the back of the couch. He looks more annoyed than curious. Looks like I picked a bad time to interrupt.

“Don’t mind him,” Amanda says. “He’s just very protective of our movie time. What can we help with?”

“Uh,” I start. It feels weird that she’s taking over the conversation, but it might be for the best. Dante doesn’t seem to be very receptive. I blow out a breath. “I’ve been trying to call on a spirit for the past few days, and she isn’t coming through.”

“She probably crossed over,” Dante says.

“It’s possible, but I don’t think she did,” I tell him.

“You didn’t help her, or whatever?” he asks.

“She was hanging around for a while,” I admit. “I didn’t know why until recently.”

I don’t want to tell them the rest, but I know I need to.

“It was a personal visit, right?” Dante raises a pierced eyebrow. “Ghosts don’t usually hang around a place or a person unless they have ties to them.”

“Turns out she’s my sister,” I tell him. “I didn’t know until she proved it.”

“And now she’s not answering your call?”

“Right. I don’t know what to do.”

“Well, she either moved on once she told you, because that’s what she felt she needed to do before she left this realm, or someone else moved her along.”

A chill rolls down my spine. “Someone else?”

“Another medium, or a necromancer, if there are any of those in town.”

“Unlikely,” I tell him, thinking about necromancers. “Not right now, anyway. Most of the students go home for winter break. There aren’t that many witches who live here year-round.”

“Another medium, then.”

His words slam into me, and I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before this moment.

Another medium. I got this ability from my father. Sara’s dad. It must be him.

Why would he do this?

“Is that all?” Dante asks.

I clear my throat. “I’ll check into that angle. If I can’t get an answer, I was wondering if I could talk to your sister? I need to know what happened to mine.”

“If you can’t find out who moved her on, I can ask Kelly to help.”

“Thanks,” I tell him. “Enjoy the rest of your movie. I should get going.”

Chapter Forty-Six

Silas

Iroundthecornerand sink back against the building, taking my phone out of my pocket. I stored Danny’s number instead of deleting it, which turned out to be a good call. I text him, asking for Sara’s address. Telling him it’s urgent. I don’t give him the details.
