“Yes. Now, did she tell you where the key is?”

“Key?” I looked over at her as I asked the question, but she appeared to be just as confused as I was.

“Yes. She has a key, which belongs to something I need dearly. I want it back.”

“I don’t think she has it,” I replied.

“Yes, she does!” He was an impatient man. Everyone knew him as a hothead. “Now you have five minutes to call me back and tell me you’ve found it or I’m coming down there for her, and you. Professional, my ass!” Then he just hung up.

Even though I didn’t usually care what assholes thought, his words stung. Maybe it was because of the respect I had for his father. Roberto Zoria was a stern but well-respected man. He had a just reason for all his actions. I was learning his son wasn’t like him. Anyone who would lie to someone they said they loved and leave them to grieve wasn’t a real man in my book.

I knew my feelings stemmed from growing up with a single mother who cried over different losers that treated her poorly. I was too young to protect her before the final one took everything from her, including her life.

I was a grown man and I knew I could protect this woman, who was more like an angel than the monster I had been led to believe. She had seen me, a stranger, in need of help and didn’t hesitate to come to my aid. I suddenly felt unworthy to even be in her presence. I had let the darkness consume me over the years, she was the light. But I also knew I was her only hope of surviving.

“Who was that?” she asked with a shaky voice. I wondered if she had heard his voice and recognized it.

“Your fiance.” I went over to her and cut the ropes that bound her to the chair. “And we have to get you out of here.”

Chapter Four

Georgia

I had heard the words that came out of his mouth, but I didn't fully comprehend them. I didn’t understand how my dead fiancé, or the one I thought was dead, could have called him. I briefly considered the possibility of it being a ghost.

“I think you’re confused. My fiancé was murdered,” I explained to him.

I thought back to when the police arrived at my door to tell me the news. I remembered falling to the ground and sobbing. Then going down to the station and reviewing the footage, identifying his body at the morgue, and finally being handed his urn full of his ashes.

“I don’t have time to explain.” He cut the final portion of the rope.

That’s when I realized my captor was releasing me. As soon as I was free, I bolted from the chair towards my bedroom.

“We don’t have time for this!” He yelled after me.

I heard him follow me. I attempted to shut my bedroom door, but he was quicker and he wedged his foot between the door and the door frame.

“I’m calling the police!” I rushed towards my bed where my purse was sitting, inside of it was my cell phone. Before I could reach it, I felt myself being jerked back.

“That’s a dumb idea. You’ll be dead faster. I am your only chance at living.”

“You? But you want to kill me!” I pointed out angrily.

He wasn’t making any sense. First, he had planned to torture and kill me for something his boss said I had. Then, he was saying that he was my chance at living. I wondered what bizarre world he thought we lived in.

“I don’t have time to explain. Right now your fiancé, and who knows who else, are on their way here. He wants you dead over some key.”

“This makes no sense!” I yelled out in frustration.

Tears swelled in my eyes. I was so confused and scared. I wondered what I had gotten myself in the middle of. Donovan always joked my kindness would get me in trouble one day, and at that moment, I realized how true he had been.

“Look, I know this is confusing and I promise I will explain what I can. But right now, you have to get out of this apartment. If you don’t, you’ll end up dead.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because I am the only one youcantrust right now.”

I could hear the sincerity in his voice. I wanted to trust him. But then I remembered how he had already fooled me once and I wasn’t going to be that trusting again.
