“Don’t you recognize me?”

He moves into the light and my breath freezes in my throat. He looks like me. So much like me that I somehow know this man must be my father.

“You’re David.”

“I am.”

“I need to find you.”

His pale head bobs. “I know you do. But you won’t find me here.”

“In New Orleans?”

But he doesn’t answer. He starts to fade away and I groan, my arms reaching out for him. “Wait! I need to talk to you! Need to know about you and my grandmother. Please, don’t go.”

Tears trail down my cheeks and I struggle, wrapped in the blankets of the bed.

“Baby, I’m here. You’re safe. Nothing will happen to you if you come back to me.”

I open my eyes, sobbing wildly. Christian’s bright blue eyes flash like lasers in the dark. I practically climb up him, the hurt and loneliness pushed back into the dark when he holds me. I need his touch. Need him to make it all right.

“Please,” I whimper, my mouth drifting up and down the corded strength of his tanned throat.

“What do you need, my mate? I will give you anything you desire if you just stop crying. It’s killing me seeing you like this.”

“I need you. Just you. For tonight I need you more than anything I’ve ever wanted.”

He shakes his dark head. “I cannot touch you if you’re not ready.”

“I’m ready. I want to be yours. Want you to be mine. I want it all. Eternity with you by my side. Just take away the pain.”

“I would gladly take all of your burdens on myself. But I need to know that you’re thinking clearly. Not terrified of some damn nightmare.”

“It wasn’t a nightmare. I just saw my grandfather and I think he’s already dead. I’ve never talked to a living person in my dreams. Except for you.”

“That’s because I was calling for you and I’m your mate.”

“Then be my mate.”

“Are you sure, Artemis? This is forever.”

“I’m sure. I don’t know why you can block all the voices in my head. Or why there’s blessed silence when I stand by you, but it feels like I need it more than anything. Need you.”

He nods his head but he still looks worried. “I don’t want to take advantage of you.”

“I know what I’m saying. Please make love to me, Christian. I want to be your mate.”

He nods his head slowly and then unwraps his arms from around me. I protest, trying to hold him to me.

“I need to take off my clothes.”

“Don’t leave me.”

“I’m not leaving you, mate. I just need to take off my clothes.”

My hands wrap in his t-shirt, gripping him in a steely grasp. “Jesus, baby. I don’t think this is a good idea right now. I can feel your fear.”

“I can feel your desire. Doesn’t that mean something too?”
