I nod. “Yes. I think it became a thing because most mates don’t want to live without the other one.”

“I see. So you and I will literally share everything. Even death.”

Nodding, I sigh. “Does that change anything for you?”

“I don’t think so. It’s just unusual.”

“Many couples go within days or hours of each other. I like to think that it’s because of the love they feel for each other. Their fates are entwined as much as a dragon and his mate.”

“I understand.”

“Will you let me love you? Wear my mark and be mine until we die together?”

“I don’t know yet. I want you. But I don’t know about the mating mark or anything like that. That sounds permanent.”

“More permanent than anything else on this planet. Much more permanent than marriage.”

“I’m not ready for that.”

I climb away from her and sit on the edge of the bed, running my hands through my hair. “Can I say anything to change your mind?”

“No. I have to take care of something for my grandmother. She died recently. She’s the one that left me the necklace.”

“I wonder how she got the Dragon’s Eye?”

“I don’t know. But she just told me that I’m someone else’s daughter. That she loved a man here in New Orleans but she left him for some reason. Her parents already had plans for her to marry the son of a friend and I guess she couldn’t say no.”

“Hmmm. Who are you looking for?”

“David McDermott. He’s my father and she never told him so she wanted me to tell him.”

I stand up and move away from her, eyes narrowing when her eyes skitter to the corners of the room, her mouth tightening, her body stiffening.

“What’s wrong?”

“When you held me I couldn’t hear their voices. Now they’re back.”

“Voices?” I study her and then my eyes widen. “I knew you didn’t smell exactly human. You’re an empath. A psychic.”

She nods. “I am. And normally every day is torture. The voices are all around me, begging me, threatening me, crying to me. I can’t sleep right. That’s why I didn’t think anything about you talking to me in my sleep. They all do. I just thought you were another dead man.”

“But it’s strange that I blocked them out when I was with you.”

Maybe I’m more than her mate. Maybe I’m her anchor in the storm that is her gift.

CHAPTER7

Artemis

Christian left. Went to bed and now I’m alone in the room. We talked for hours and then he promised that he’d help me find my father.

I’m surprised that he’s going to let me go. But the tightness in his granite jaw says he doesn’t want to.

I sigh and close my eyes, darkness dragging me down. Exhaustion claws at me and I can’t fight it any longer.

I know I’m sleeping but I also know that there’s something with me. Someone.

I turn and see a blonde man hiding in the shadows. “Who are you?” I gasp, startled.
