“Good. I’ll be back.” I drop another kiss on her nose and grin when she shoves me off of her.

She’s a fiery little thing sometimes and I have to admit that I like it.

Running outside, I jump into my truck and head into town. I am about to do the craziest thing I’ve done in awhile. But if I’m going to be with a woman with children, I need more than just my work truck.

I know that one of my men, Johnson, has a nice used car for sale that he’s been trying to get rid of since his wife talked him into a new car not long ago.

“Hey, Johnson. You got that car here?”

“Sure. My wife took the other car into the shop to get it undercoated so she’s got my truck and I have the old car.

“Is it a good, reliable vehicle?”

“Yeah. It’s just a little older and we wanted this new car. We definitely don’t need three vehicles.”

“Great! I’d like to take a look at it.”

“Okay. I didn’t know you needed a new car. You’ve got a truck that you use for free.”

“I need something with a little more space.” I look away, hoping he doesn’t ask me why.

Instead, he chuckles. “Well, well, well. The other guys were right. I’m gonna owe the guys some money I guess.”

“You guys were betting on me?”

“Yep. They said that you’re in love with the woman at the fire today.”

“I…I am in love with her. But she has a niece and nephew that she’s adopting. So I need a vehicle that’s reliable and has a bit of space in it. Her vehicle isn’t too nice and I want her to be able to drive this one while I’m at work.”

“Well, it’s a good car. Let’s go take a look.”

Quick look under the hood and we make the arrangements, I write him out a check and then we get the paperwork changed at city hall. Proud new owner of a new car, I head out to the farmhouse, whistling under my breath to the radio. Frosty the Snowman comes on and I smile and sing along.

The sappy Christmas music usually just depresses the heck out of me but this year is different. This year I have something to come home to. Something to make my days just a little brighter.

And if things go as well as I hope they do, hopefully soon I’ll talk Jessica into marrying me as quickly as possible. Then we’ll be the family that I’ve always wanted.

CHAPTER7

Jessica

Ican’t believe what’s happening right now. Richard is standing in front of me with a new car and a set of keys that he’s trying to foist on me.

“I can’t take these!” I try to hand the keys back.

“I told you that I want to take care of you. I told you that I intend to do it and that it might scare you a little. But I’m all in. I intend to make you mine one of these days soon. And in the meantime, I’m going to do the best I can to show you how good it can be with me.”

“I don’t need things. I’m fully capable of taking care of my life and the kids.”

“Told you. I know you don’t. Iwantto do this. Iwantto prove to you that I’m a good man and that you should give me a chance. Now…how about we go ahead and head out shopping for things that you and the children need. And then we’ll arm wrestle over who’s paying for it.”

I laugh, unable to stay mad at him. The earnest, warm look in his eyes gives me a safe, comfortable feeling. But it also makes my belly swoop like I’m on the top of a roller coaster, tipped over and ready to fall.

We arrive back in town and he helps me out of the car, ignoring the interested looks of some of the bigger gossips in town.

Folding my hand inside his arm, he walks with me, head tilted to catch my every word.

“So what did they say when you called and told them what happened?”
