“I called Leslie and asked if she could tell the principal since I couldn’t get through to her. She was shocked but she told me to take all the time I needed. She can take the kids home with her if I’m not done.”

“Does she know about Miracle’s problems?”

“Yes, of course she does. She’s my best friend and she’s been over a few times since the attorney brought the children to me.”

“Good, good.” Our steps lead us into the small store that carries a little bit of everything.

Perusing the aisles of items, we manage to find a few items of clothing for each of the kids. Underwear, socks and some jeans and tees. Even some sweatshirts and sweaters. Laughing, I throw a pink, fluffy butterfly into the cart for Miracle.

Richard finds a baseball bat that he approves of and then some balls for Gavin. We work quickly to replace all the things that we can in town, knowing that we’re on a time crunch.

There’s still a couple of hours until Miracle and Gavin are done for the day but my phone rings and I frown when I see that it’s Leslie calling from the school.

“Hey, Les! Is something wrong?”

“Thank goodness you answered. Please…you need to get here. I don’t know exactly what’s going on but I’m with Miracle on the way to the hospital.”

“Shoot!” I push the cart wildly to the corner and race for the front of the store, forgetting Richard in my haste.

He grabs hold of me and holds me steady. “What’s going on?” His calm, chocolate gaze makes my heart race but yet settles something in me so that I can finally breathe.

“I don’t know what’s wrong. But Leslie is on her way to the hospital with Miracle. I need to go to the hospital.”

“No! Wait! I’ve got Miracle. You need to get to Gavin!” Les screams into her phone.

“Gavin.” My heart freezes in my chest. “What’s going on with Gavin? Did something happen at the school? Is he on his way to the hospital too?”

“No! He’s in the office. Or at least he was the last I heard. His biological mother turned up at the school. Claimed that since she gave up Gavin to your sister and her husband for adoption, she should get him back. And since they don’t know what’s going on exactly and your paperwork is still being filed with the state, they had Gavin in the office. They brought both kids down there and then the mother tried to grab Gavin and take him and Miracle got very upset. It was the saddest freaking thing I’ve ever seen. Gavin was crying because Miracle started having an attack and because his biological mother was trying to grab him and leave and he doesn’t even know who she is. You need to go to him. Take any paperwork you’ve got but get there quickly. The school was calling the Sheriff because she was being a huge disruption.”

“What? There’s no way she can get Gavin back is there? She gave him up for adoption to my sister. He’s our family now not hers.”

“That’s what I think too. But just get there. Quick!”

“We’re on the way!” I hang up the phone. “We’ve got to go to the school.”

“What about Miracle?”

“Leslie has her. But Gavin’s biological mother apparently heard somehow about my sister’s death. Now she thinks that she can just take Gavin back. Like he’s a book that she loaned out and now she wants it back.”

“Do you have paperwork from the attorney? Something that shows that you’re the legal guardian for Gavin and that you’ve already filed adoption papers?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Then I don’t think she’s got a leg to stand on. Let’s go get our boy.”

Smiling, I let him lead me to the car and he drives fast but efficiently back to the house. My head is reeling but I’m so happy that I have him. I don’t think I’d have been able to drive myself right now.

I had the papers in a small safe that was fireproof in the apartment and grabbed it to take back to Richard’s. Now I shuffle through the papers until I find the folder that the attorney gave me with all the paperwork for Miracle and Gavin.

“I’ve got it!” I wave the papers triumphantly over my head. Richard nods at me and then hangs up his phone. “Who were you calling?”

“I talked to the principal at the school. And I talked to the Sheriff and told him about the circumstances and that you have paperwork and he’s making sure that Miriam doesn’t walk out the door. I also called the hospital because I have a friend who works there. A nurse in the ER. She’s going to keep an eye on Leslie and Miracle until we can make it there.”

It feels like my heart is going to explode out of my chest with love for this man. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without him. He’s been on my side and by my side since I met him.

Tears fall from my eyes in a flood of emotion.

“Hey, hey.” He hugs me close and I curl up on the solid warmth of his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat under my head. “Don’t worry. We’ve got this, baby. Nobody’s gonna take those kids away from us.”
