You need to see this. Found it on the vic’s phone.

There was a video file attached to the text. Matt hit play and a video started playing, showing a woman with long dark hair performing sex acts with an unidentified man. Matt would bet money the man was Russell Molloy. He looked at the blurry image from the surveillance video and compared it to the video playing on his phone. He tapped Rebecca’s shoulder. “Lena just sent this to me. Think it’s the same woman?”

Rebecca watched a short bit of the video, frowning. “Maybe. Hard to tell without a better surveillance image. But is it my imagination, or is the camera angle off here? It’s almost like he was using a hidden camera. Like the woman didn’t know she was being filmed.”

Matt watched another minute, noting that this video moved too fast between images for it to be one video. It had to be clips from several different sex acts edited together. Some of the scenes were filmed close up and with the woman directly facing the camera, but a few of them were taken from an odd side angle. Rebecca was right, the creator had been using a hidden camera for at least some of the recordings.

Matt turned his attention back to the video monitors when Les started speaking again. “She did a pretty good job keeping her head down as she was leaving. Even our elevator cameras didn’t get much more than the top of her head. But then she went out back and tossed that bag into the dumpster. We’ve secured it so you can search it at your convenience. The good news is, we’ve had some issues with people climbing into our dumpsters and getting injured. We installed cameras out there to deter them. Here’s the best shot we have.” Les pulled up a still image of a woman’s face.

Matt studied the picture. It was the same woman who was in the video Lena had sent them. She looked vaguely familiar, but he couldn’t put his finger on why. She was around thirty, with long dark hair that looked wet on the surveillance photo. That made sense if she’d just come from killing Russell in his shower.

An indrawn breath was followed by a whispered, “Fuck.”

Matt turned away from the monitor to find Rebecca looking curiously at Nate, who was staring at the screen looking sick.

“You know who she is?”

Nate nodded. “I do. Her name is Gemma Milani. She works in our housekeeping department. I’ve known her for years, helped her get the job here. There has to be a mistake. There’s no way she could kill anyone.”

Gemma Milani. The name rang a bell, but the reason still eluded Matt. He’d look her up when they got back to the station. Nate’s defence of her made him wonder what type of relationship they had, too. Not that it mattered. As much as Matt respected Nate, he couldn’t let that cloud his judgement or affect how he did his job. And right now, all evidence pointed at Gemma Milani being a killer.
