CarryingPhoenix into my condo in the Hancock, I don’t hesitate to settle her into my bedroom instead of the guest bedroom. As I step back from my bed, I refuse to acknowledge the sight of her in my bed feels right—like it’s where she belongs.

I leave Amaya with Phoenix to get her settled. Amaya will watch over Phoenix for the next few days, unless the doctor cannot do without her. The doctor is willing to give her another day of pain meds by IV drip to keep her comfortable.

I’m in my office and there’s a ton of shit I need to do. Today was one of three I usually go to check on the brothel. I should be getting ready to go into the club, but I’m not going anywhere until it’s safe to leave Phoenix alone.

My mind twists over what will come if I make the call. I never told Milos what happened. It didn’t matter, he knew. He read the file and knew. How can I do this, make the call and not tell her? She deserves to know. It’s probably a huge factor in why she’s coming after us. The trafficking wasn’t the only reason why.

What happens once she finds out?

Amaya knocks on the open door of my office. “Sir?”

I nod. She enters offering me a phone. “This is hers. The doctor meant to give it to you earlier.”

Taking the phone, I’m surprised it instantly comes to life. How odd she doesn’t have a lock on her phone. Maybe it isn’t so odd if she never has to worry about anyone getting into it. The screen is cracked in multiple places yet still works fine.

Curious, I tap on her internet. She can be smart—she just chooses not to be. Her internet browser is the one Valdez had us use on our phones and computers because it doesn’t track our usage. There are multiple tabs open.

What I see has me sitting down at my desk. Holy shit. This is porn…in written form. There are a few ads of half-naked women, but other than that it’s apparently nothing more than stories. She has a saved list of several stories. I click on the first one, fuck. A father raping his daughter, another story, same thing, another story same thing.

Taking a deep breath, I read through the stories, trying to see if there are any similarities between them. There are several: I notice right away they all are rape that becomes acceptance by the girl. The girl simply wants her father’s love and attention, so she gives in to get it.

I make the call.

CHAPTER10

Phoenix

Pain explodes from behind my eyes, forcing them open. All I want to do is sink back beneath the darkness, away from the pain.

Strength and heat envelop my hand—that damn zip of electricity is there again. “Deep breath, zaika.”

Aleksander. My eyes fly open. He’s standing above me, his golden eyes glittering as they run over me.

“What doeszaikamean?” It isn’t supposed to be a whisper. It comes out as one since it hurts to breathe. Actually, everything hurts—except my hand in his.

“Little bunny.” He grins at me wickedly. “You are extremely cuddly.”

“Am not.”

A chuckle that grazes up my tummy comes from him. “If you say so, I’m not arguing with you while you’re in pain.”

“The pain is pretty high.” I sigh.

He calls out for someone named Amaya. A woman appears wearing light blue scrubs. A flood of Russian comes out of Aleksander. I don’t understand a single word. They argue for a few minutes before she sighs and pulls out a leather bag from beneath the huge bed. I have no doubt I’m in Aleksander’s bed.

The woman is sullen, yet gives me a smile as she holds my arm straight. Oh crap, a shot. I squeeze my eyes shut. Aleksander’s hand tightens around mine. “Ah, if you don’t like shots from here on out no shots. If you don’t want one right now—”

“I’ll take a shot this time. The pain is bad,” I rush to tell him, afraid she won’t give me the shot since she already seems like she doesn’t want to.

“Then a shot is what you’ll get.” His other hand runs over my hair.

I’m lost in those golden eyes running over me softly. Aleksander is simply stunning.Stop thinking of him as stunning, I order myself. “How bad is it?” I force the words out.

His jaw clenches tight. “Bad enough. A broken arm and a dislocated shoulder. The single knife wound was what almost killed you because of a lot of lost blood. The doctor said you were a few hours away from death. You’re lucky our doctor is excellent and I’m O negative.” A corner of his disgustingly gorgeous lips tips up.

Cold runs through me. “What does you being O negative have to do with it?” Pleading with him to tell me I’m wrong for thinking it.
