I began to follow him, just as eager, but Amelia ran up to us, her face covered in chocolate frosting. “The cake’s really yummy,” she said.

Laughing, I dropped to my knees to wipe at her cheeks, looking up at Jax apologetically.

“Let your mom take care of it,” he said in a low, urgent voice, but Amelia reached out and tugged on his hand.

“Present time,” she pleaded. “I want to show you what we got you, Mama.” The look on her face said she was about to kick up a fuss if we didn’t give in, and Jax saw it as well as I did.

“Fine, fine, don’t blow a gasket,” he said, ruffling her dark curls.

Everyone gathered around, knowing there was no fighting a three-year-old. She ran to the table and picked a small present with a huge pink bow, and brought it to me. “This one is from Daddy.” She looked around the crowd defiantly. “My daddy gives the best presents, doesn’t he, Mama?”

I smiled at Jax over the top of her head, and he leaned to kiss me as I thought about the theater, our beautiful home, my perfect daughter, and all our children to come.

“Yes,” I said. “He really does.”
