Forcing my lids open, I shifted to place my chin on Shade’s sternum. Their conversation fell silent.

“Not Grandger,” I muttered. “You’re home.”

Having said my piece, I nuzzled Shade’s neck, inhaling deep, and fell into a blissful sleep knowing no one would hurt me while I was with them.

TWENTY-TWO

SHADE

The sharp ring of my cell phone jerked me out of a deep sleep. Unwinding my arm from around Georgia’s waist, I felt around the nightstand for the annoying device. Coming up empty, I cracked one eye open, the time on the clock snapping me fully awake.

A call at three in the morning never turned out to be anything good.

Georgia stirred beside me, making me pause, hoping not to wake her. As I flipped the phone open to answer the call, I saw Trap’s eyes open, focusing on me from the other bed. His brows dipped in worry as he pushed to sit up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed.

Like me, he knew this wasn’t a good sign.

I glanced at the small glowing screen, my stomach dropping as Max’s name flashed.

“What’s wrong?” I said the moment the phone pressed against my ear.

“Get your asses out of Houston.” Before he finished the sentence, I was out of bed and reaching for my jeans. Shuffling sounds behind me signaled Trap had followed my lead and rushed to get dressed too.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know all the details yet, but he’s dead. Plus his entire protection detail.” My fingers froze where they were fastening the button of my jeans. “I just got the call from the FBI telling me Georgia’s location might be compromised too.”

I whipped my head around at a soft groan. Curly dark hair sticking out in every direction above sleepy eyes, Georgia sat up with a yawn, arms coming high over her head. My heart hammered against my chest as she smiled softly, only for her features to pinch when she focused on my jeans.

“Do they know about home?” I asked while tugging on the T-shirt Trap tossed my way. If the people after Georgia’s husband knew about Grandger, this was bigger than just us getting out of town. We needed to think about Grace’s safety too.

“I don’t think so. I was meticulous about keeping her location under wraps. But there in Houston, you three are in danger. Get your ass out of town, and make sure no one follows you.”

“What’s going on?” Georgia’s worried tone put an extra boost in my hurry to pack our shit and get out as soon as possible.

I caught bits and pieces of whatever Max was saying while I pulled out something for Georgia to wear.

“Shade,” Max snapped.

“What? I’m here, just trying to get shit done so we can get out of here.”

“I was asking if you or Trap noticed anyone tailing you from the FBI office.” I stilled, thinking back to earlier, and cursed.

“No,” I barked. “We were a little preoccupied with getting Georgia back to the hotel and calling the doctor—”

“Why the fuck would she need a doctor?” Max yelled.

“There’s no time for that. Who are we dealing with?” Turning to Trap, I pulled the phone away from my lips and hitched my chin to his sidearm sitting on top of the dresser. “Make sure it’s fully loaded and one in the chamber. We need to get out of here now.”

“Shade?” I gritted my teeth at Georgia’s trembling voice.

Fuck, I was scaring her. Forcing my jaw to unclench, I tried to offer her a smile. “You’re okay, baby. We’ll keep you safe. We just need to get out of here.”

At some point, I’d tell her that bastard was dead, just not now.

“What’s going—”

An ear-piercing screech filled the room, followed by a pulsing blinding light. Georgia leapt off the bed, arms tightly wrapped around my waist the next second. In the phone, Max’s yelling was barely a whisper over the fire alarm. Taking one of my T-shirts that I kept out for her, I slipped it over Georgia’s head, Trap already on his knees at her feet, slipping on her shoes.
