“Call in backup,” he ordered. “We need help. If these bastards follow us—” His eyes flicked to the rearview mirror. “Fuck. The bastards are following us. We won’t be able to lose them. And if it’s who we think it is, they have a shit ton more firepower than our two Glocks.”

Digging my phone out of the back pocket of the driver’s seat, where I’d left it after turning it off the moment we left Grandger, I hit the power button. Heart racing, I slammed the device against my knee to hurry the piece of shit up.

“Two. Coming in hot,” Trap said while taking an on-ramp to the highway going close to ninety. We hit a bump, lifting us off the seats a few inches. Georgia screamed, hands flying into the air to grab the door handle for dear life.

The leather groaned beneath me when I swiveled to keep one eye on the two approaching SUVs while scrolling through my contacts, searching for the one I needed. I tapped the number for our old police chief and pressed the phone to my ear.

“What the hell are you doing calling me at—” he mumbled into the phone the moment it stopped ringing.

“Chief, Trap and I are in Houston and need backup, anything you can offer. Call up whoever is on duty or not, I—fuck,” I shouted as an SUV swerved to clip our back bumper. “Headed North on 610, black SUV with Texas plates. Going about fucking ninety—”

“One hundred,” Trap yelled, correcting me.

“Two dark SUVs following.”

“We’ll get you help, but get off the damn highway,” the chief ordered. “Now. Take whatever side road you can, but get the fuck off the highway before you get yourselves and some innocent family killed.”

He was right. I didn’t have to like it, but he was right.

I glanced through the windshield, seeing an exit coming up for an industrial area. After rattling off the exit we’d take, tapping Trap on the shoulder to make sure he heard the plan, I tossed the phone to the floorboard without ending the call.

Hopefully it would be enough to help them track us if needed.

Sweat rolled down the side of my face, dripping off my chin and coating my chest, making my T-shirt stick to my skin. With a grunt, Trap jerked the wheel to take the exit seconds before we flew past. I twisted to see out the back window, hoping the bastards missed it, but they followed, somehow making the tight turn too.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I muttered under my breath.

“I’m sorry,” Georgia sobbed. It was only the shaking of her voice that drew my attention to the tears streaming down her face. “You’re in this because of me, and we’re going to—”

“Be fine and live happily fucking ever after,” Trap yelled. “This is not your fault. And we will get out of this no matter what those fuckers behind us try. Because last night wasn’t enough. Hell, the last month wasn’t enough. I want forever, and—oh fuck, hold on.”

I cursed, and Georgia screamed as the SUV jerked to the right, the sound of crunching metal filling the air. Trap bellowed a stream of words I couldn’t make out. Hitting the down button on the window, I gripped the overhead handle and pulled myself up and out of the SUV.

Wind whipped by my ears, and tears instantly leaked from my eyes. The coarse grip of the gun embedded in my palm as I straightened my arm and aimed the barrel toward the approaching vehicle. Only for it to jerk to the other lane, disappearing around the other side of our SUV, out of my range.

“Shit,” I yelled as I slunk back into our SUV. “I can’t get a clear shot—”

Between heartbeats, I was plotting how to get us out of the shit show, and the next the world flipped. No. Not the world, us.

I rose midair, side slamming to the roof before crashing back down as our car rolled. Glass shattered, Georgia’s screams cutting through the crunch of metal, though they quickly cut off as we continued to roll.

With one more toss, my leg slammed down, getting stuck between the door and captain chair. The crack of my bone seemed to rattle my thoroughly beaten body a second before the pain registered. The SUV creaked as it lolled side to side before finally stilling. Everything shifted as if we were still moving. I blinked several times to still my vision, but nothing helped.

The spike of pain from my leg continued to grow, making my stomach roll.

Or maybe that was from the multiple times my head slammed against the roof.

Warm liquid slicked down my forehead, leaking into my eyes.

“Georgia,” I rasped before coughing, then hissing in pain. “Trap.”

Nothing.

“Answer me.” I coughed again. Reaching up, I swiped the blood from my skin and squeezed both eyes shut before opening them wide, forcing my vision to clear.

A deep groan snapped my head toward the front, sending pain zapping down my spine from the quick movement.

“Fuck,” Trap grumbled. “Shade? Sweetheart?”
