Even though I’m not at peace with the decision, confidence infiltrates every fiber of my being. “Thank you.”

He kisses my forehead. “For what, baby?”

I lean back to meet his gaze. “For loving me even though I’m a beautiful disaster.”

“You’re beautiful without a doubt, and this is quite a disaster. But that doesn’t mean you’re broken in any way.” He brushes a lock of hair away from my face. “I love you regardless.”

Our lips meet in a sweet kiss. My hunger for him soon overwhelms my sense. I climb into his lap and cradle his face in my hands, deepening the kiss. My touch is gentle, aware of the bruising.

Rob grasps my hip with his left hand, gently pressing my thigh with his injured right one. He hisses against my lips.

I pull away, but he hooks his arm around my waist and holds me still.

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“I’ll be fine,” he murmurs against my cheek. “I need you just like this.”

When I search his eyes for a flicker of pain, I’m lost. This sweet, compassionate, wonderful man...how have I lived this long without him? And how can I ensure I never have to be parted from him for a moment longer? “I love you, Rob.”

“I love you too.” He nuzzles against my neck. “We’ll get through this together.”

“Then what?” I gasp when he kisses the sensitive spot below my ear.

“Guess we’ll figure that out when we get there.”

“Will you marry me?”

The moment the words leave my lips, the weight of them dissipates into the air.

“Wait. What did you say?” Rob grips my shoulders and holds my gaze. “Say it again.”

“Marry me, Rob.”

“Are you feeling okay?” He presses the back of his hand to my forehead. “Are you feverish? Delusional?”

I laugh and shake my head. “No. I’m serious.”

“Oh, thank God, I thought I was imagining things for a moment.” His smile turns effervescent. “Is that what you want?”

“Absolutely.”

“You’re sure?”

“Positive.”

He sighs in relief. “Good, because I’m getting too old for this waiting-around bullshit.”

I roll my eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic.”

“I wasn’t being dramatic. I was just waiting for the woman of my dreams to realize I’ve wanted her for years.”

My hand rests on his heart. “Why didn’t you say something sooner?”

“Trying to convince her of anything is like walking on broken glass.”

“Totally dramatic.” I chuckle. “So what’s your answer?”

“Yes.” He kisses me softly. “I will marry you, Marcy.”
