“I can let myself out. Have a good night, Carter,” she said, softly. “And um… thanks.”

I got back inside my condo and closed the door.

“Thanks?” I muttered to myself. “We had sex and I thanked him.”

I shut my eyes and all I saw was images of Carter. Carter tugging his shirt off over his head. Carter steering me towards his bed. Carter laying me down, mouthing my skin through the lace of my bra. I shivered and curled up on my sofa, my body still thrumming, my lips still swollen from his kiss.

I had to get out of there before I begged for more.

I stood up and made my way to the bathroom, turning on the shower and letting the room fill with steam. I stripped off my dress and my pretty underwear, realizing that it still smelled faintly like his body wash. I ran the lace between my fingers, touching it the way Carter did. Before he went for it with his mouth like he was starving for me.

My legs shook as I got into the shower. I stood under the spray for so long that my skin turned a little pink. Every part of me felt… touched. Treasured. Worshipped. I felt beautiful.

I felt alive.

I guess he kind of deserved the thanks.

That familiar knot in my lower stomach started to build again. I ran my hands up my thighs, leaning against the wall as I slipped one between my legs. I worked myself over until I came again, gasping Carter’s name.

I tried to remind myself that it was just one night. One amazing night to remind myself what being wanted felt like. One night to make up for everything I’ve been missing out on for way too long.

But as I dried off, threw on some regular cotton panties and an oversize tee shirt, something became painfully obvious.

I definitely wanted more than just one night.

“How doyou like your new room?” I asked Rex as we drove to school. I’d finished it on my own a few days ago and Rex’s things were finally back where they were supposed to be.

“It’s awesome,” he answered. “Carter was right about the accent wall.”

I ignored the part about Carter. “That’s good. So you think you’re starting to like the new place?”

He shrugged. “It’s pretty okay.”

“Onlypretty okay?”

“I like that it’s closer to school andPizza Pizza.”

“That’s true.”

“The real house is closer to the park, though,” he pointed out.

I sighed. He called Desmond’s house thereal house. I felt punched in the gut.

“Rex, you know, the condo is yourrealhouse too,” I said. “Both places are your homes now.”

He nodded, but didn’t say anything.

“I want the new condo to feel just as much like home as you father’s house,” I told him.

“I know.”

“I’m really trying here, Rex.”

“I know, Mom,” he said, again.
