“I didn’t buy it; I borrowed it from Fallon.”

I freeze, then pull away from him with horror slithering through my veins. “Fallon? You got the waffle maker from Four Cups?”

He tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and chucks my chin. “Nowhere else was open.”

Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no.

I slap my hands over my eyes and groan.

He closes in on me, hands on my waist. “What? What is it? Georgia, talk to me.”

Dropping my arms, I scowl. “You have no idea what you’ve just done.” I take a step away from him, turning to lean my palms against the counter. Bella sniffs around our legs, jumping up on my legs and then on his, feeling the sudden tension in the room. She barks once, questioning.

Bewildered, he stares at me, at the dog, then looks at the waffle maker. Then he greases it and pours another ladle of batter in. Finally he meets my gaze again. “I don’t follow. What’s the problem?”

“Sebastian,” I growl.

“Georgia.”

“You went to Four Cups!”

“Nowhere else was open!” He throws his arms out. “You wanted waffles.”

We stare at each other for a beat, then understanding lights in his eyes. His lips curl in a slow, dangerous smile. “Ah. You were going to keep me as your dirty little secret, but now everyone will know.”

“Not a secret,” I protest. “But…ugh! You don’t understand.”

He leans a hip against the counter. “Explain it to me, but first, eat your waffle. It’ll get cold.”

I open my mouth, then snap it shut when my stomach growls. Sebastian grins, then places a soft kiss against my forehead and urges me to sit down.

The waffle is divine. Sebastian sits across from me and eats his own breakfast. Once all the syrup is mopped up off our plates, he leans back in his chair and tilts it onto two legs, leaning an arm against the kitchen counter at his back.

“So,” he starts. “You didn’t want anyone to know you spent the night with me.”

I raise a finger. “No. I wanted to control the narrative.”

He laughs. “Sorry, Sweet Peach. I ruined that, didn’t I?”

“Do you know what will happen when I go into town this morning? Even if I try to hide, they’ll find me. Those women will hunt me down and waterboard me until I tell them exactly what happened last night.”

Sebastian’s eyes are dancing. He glances at the spot on the wall where he pinned me and made me see stars. “Everything that happened?” He doesn’t seem upset.

“These women extract gossip like they work for the CIA, Sebastian. It’s no joke.”

He sips his coffee, grinning. “Is it such a bad thing that people know you were with me last night?”

My eyes narrow. “Is this some sort of macho-male possessive thing? You want everyone to know you screwed me? You’re marking me like Bella marks a lamppost?”

The chair clunks down onto four legs, and Sebastian leans forward. “If I had my way, every single person in the world would know you’re mine, Georgia.” He catches my hand and brushes his lips across my knuckles. “But I swear, I didn’t go to Four Cups to start the gossip mill turning. I just wanted to make you waffles this morning.”

Instead of snatching my hand away and storming out, offended by the fact that he thinks I now somehow belong to him, I stay caught exactly how I am, with his breath ghosting over my fingers and his lips slowly demolishing every defense I have.

He did get up extra early and found a way of making waffles for me. If the cost is a little bit of gossip, can I really complain?

“I belong to no one but myself,” I finally answer. “And I need to get dressed and go to work.”

I stand up, only to be caught in Sebastian’s arms. His lips are beside my ear when he says, “I haven’t finished my breakfast yet.” His hands coast down my body, dipping beneath the hem of the shirt I’m wearing. My bones turn liquid, and I find myself carried up to bed once more.
