“You’re blushing.” It’s too fun, making her blush.

“I… um… okay, look.” She shakes her head, her dark hair falling over her shoulders. “Obviously, I’m in over my head here. I came to you, hoping for a job. I’m a hard worker. I don’t have a lot of sexual, um, experience, but—”

“You don’t have any sexual experience.” I take a bite of the apple, my teeth sinking into the crisp flesh.

She raises a brow. “I didn’t say that—”

“I did. You’re vanilla. A little vanilla bean.”

“Okay, maybe. But I’m a quick learner.” She persists despite her discomfort. “I can work nights, weekends, whatever.”

She said she doesn’t see eye to eye with her boss. Is that who she’s in trouble with? “Who do you work for now?”

“I’d rather not say.” She looks away.

“I’d rather you didn’t ignore my question.” I move in closer, putting my hands on her, my fingers lightly trailing down her cheek to her chin. I capture it between my finger and thumb, forcing her gaze to meet mine. “Answer me. Who do you work for?”

“The… The A—ccardis.”

The Accardis. My sister-in-law’s thug family.

Trash.

I release her chin. “What are you doing working for them?”

She shrugs. “They pay well.”

“What do you do for them?” I ask.

“Clean.” Her face brightens. “I love to clean.”

“Why didn’t you say so?” I take another bite of my apple, a bright burst of tang tickling my tongue. I’ll bet she tastes twice as sweet as this apple. Intrusive thought…Focus, Cannon. “We can use cleaners.”

She gives me a suspicious look. “What do cleaners do?”

“Clean.”

“Like… just clean?” She takes a hopeful peek at my face. “In their clothing?”

“Yes. Clean in their clothing. Well, uniforms, of course. I have to have everything sexy, beautiful. But the cleaning uniform is…” I think of the cute little French maid costumes I have for the women on my first shift cleaning team. “Modest?”

“I really love to clean. And I love to make things look beautiful. Like, I’m kind of obsessed with it. If I see something that could be made prettier, I can’t help myself.” Her gaze goes distant like she’s remembering something. “The idea nags at me till I fix the thing, whatever it is. And I’m good at doing it on a budget. You know—a few wildflowers in a jar really pretty a place up.”

“True. But we don’t do tight budgets at Fire. We’re a spare-no-expense establishment. My clientele deserves the best. And cleanliness is next to godliness.”

“I couldn’t agree more.” She nods. “I keep my house spotless.”

She says it with such conviction, it’s the first thing she’s said that I believe without question.

“You’re hired,” I say, ignoring my instincts once more.

How much trouble can this tiny girl be?

Her face brightens. She looks like she wants to burst into applause. “Really?”

“Yes.”

She smiles. “Godliness. Funny. I knew I had an angel looking over me today.”
