I nod, uncurling my fingers from his wrists and pushing against his stomach.

“Cohen, go.” I urge him and still he fucking hesitates. His icy green eyes run over me, like he’s memorizing how I look with my lips swollen from his mouth, and then his jaw tightens and he dips his head to press one more kiss to my lips. I watch as a portal opens behind him, gold and shimmering in the air.

His hand presses against his heart as he backs up, not taking his eyes off me. I mirror him, my own hand coming up to my chest as I blink back tears, the motion a silent pledge to each other. His lips twist into a smirk that doesn’t quite reach his eyes, and then he takes one more step back and disappears.

My heart lurches in my chest, and I want to call him back. I want him next to me while I do this. But what he’s doing, going to see Desi, making sure she’s safe? I need him to do that, too. I need to make sure the coven doesn’t turn their evil eye on my sister.

My dad had said that she has magic, just not the kind that I have. Not the kind that they want to wipe out of existence. So hopefully that means she’ll be safe. But I wouldn’t put anything past them.

Hardin moves into my line of vision and wraps his arms around my shoulders to get me to focus on him. His bright blue eyes run over my face. “Are you okay, love?”

I blink and run my finger over the bare patch of skin on his wrist. “I’m fine. You don’t mind, do you?”

His lips quirk into a grin, and he shakes his head. “What’s mine is yours, my Rosalind.”

I press up onto my toes and kiss him, just a quick peck to show my gratitude for his understanding. The helicopter appears overhead, just as my phone vibrates like crazy in my pocket. Half of me wants to ignore it, but the other half of me is telling me I need to pick it up.

I frown when I see it’s Merritt. I nearly don’t answer since I won’t be able to have a very long conversation, anyway. The chopper is getting closer and louder. But I plug my ear and hit the answer button.

“Mer?”

“Oh, my god, Ro!” I draw back at how frantic she sounds. How scared. “Are you… Did Cohen leave? Did you get him to leave?”

I frown, glancing over to the spot where we’d disappeared. “I did. He’s gone. Why? What’s wrong?”

She lets out a harried breath and in the background I can hear Ben making some kind of soothing noises, while also asking what the fuck is going on. “I don’t know what the hell happened, Ro, it’s never been like this. But I canremember. I can see things and I can remember them, not just feelings. Do you understand?”

I think she might be trying to tell me she can remember her visions without saying anything too incriminating in front of her very human boyfriend.

Everything in my body goes still. When I thought of the spell that would release Merritt from her binding, I actually cast it without realizing it?Shit.I might have.

“I’m sorry,” I say into the phone loudly to be heard over the sound of the approachingthwump, thwump, thwumpof the helicopter. “That might have been my fault. I didn’t mean to. I didn’t realize-”

“I don’t give a shit, Ro. Fuck!” My mouth snaps closed at her frantic tone. “You need to run. You need to go with Cohen. Don’t stay where you are! Don’t let them take you to the trials.”

Icy dread trickles down my spine. “What are you saying? Mer? What does that mean?”

I feel four sets of eyes on me, curious about what exactly is going on. Kohaku shifts against my ribs restlessly, like he wants to be let out, like he wants to face whatever’s making me so damn scared.

My best friend lets out a shaky breath. “I’m saying if you stay there, Ro, if you go to the trials, you’re going to die. I saw it.”
