"She's asleep," Riley states as he steps into the room, taking the chair across from me. "I take it, these are the flowers he sent."

I nod. "How is she?" I ask.

"Scared. Whoever this Xan is, he's really done a number on her. I've never seen her like that before, so pale and cold. I didn't think a shifter could shake like that.”

With one last glance at the note, I slid it over to him.

"Dying to be with you," Riley reads aloud. "How romantic."

"I'm guessing this is why she came back here. She remembers feeling safe here." I growl.

"She is safe here." Riley replies.

"Do we have any idea of who this Xan is?" I ask, hoping Lei had given Riley any clue about who we were looking for.

Riley shakes his head. "She doesn't think she's ever met him. I mean, she's been living outside of the pack for the past four years. It could have been anyone she’s met during that time."

"But it doesn't explain how he could have left the flowers outside our door. This place is like a goddamn fortress."

"Shit." Riley snaps, getting to his feet and stomping toward the window, looking out.

This can't be good."What is it?" I spit.

"You promise not to get mad?"

"No, I won't promise anything." I reply, hoping he hurries the hell up before I knock it out of him.

"Her first day here when you banished her to her room. I took her out for a run.”

"I thought I told you to leave her alone," I growl.

"You know me better than that. I took her down to Blackfoot Woods, but I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched. It was the strangest thing. I couldn't see anyone; it was more of a feeling. I didn't mention anything to her, as I didn't want her to worry."

"Well, whoever this Xan guy is, knows she's here. I'm going to go check the security tapes and see if I can find out how he breached the wall without alerting me. In the meantime, I want you with Lei. I don't want her alone.”

I nod. “I won’t let her out of my sight.”

“Good. I'll text you if I find anything.” I reply, dismissing him.

Chapter Ten

LEI

I’m not sure what time it is. After my conversation with Corbin and Riley, I had retreated to my bed, hiding under the covers like a child. It may not be a long-term plan, but it's the best one I've got.

A knock sounds at the door, but I ignore them. I don't want company right now. What I need is a plan to leave before Xan finds the only two other people left in my life who are important to me.

At the mere thought of him hurting Riley or Corbin, I know I wouldn't be able to live with myself.I couldn’t.

"I'm not leaving Lei. You might as well invite me in." Riley states.

I sigh. If it had been anyone else with that threat, I would have just ignored them and waited until I heard their footsteps leave only moments later, but with Riley, I know he means it. He won't leave. Not until he gets what he wants.

It was one of the reasons I loved him.

"Come in.” I finally call out.

The door opens, casting the room in warm light from the landing before he closes the door behind him, letting the room fall into shadows once more.
