"Yes." I lie, watching as she nervously nibbles at her bottom lip. "Come on, what would you rather be doing, hiding or letting your wolf out?"

"Okay." She smiles. "Just give me two minutes, and I'll meet you downstairs."

Smiling, I nod, leaving the room.

Corbin may want to hold onto his grudge, but I’m ready to move ahead, with or without him.

*.*.*.*.*

The drive to Blackfoot falls is quiet as I glance at Lei from the corner of my eye. I had a million questions I wanted to ask her, but I knew she wasn’t ready to answer them. For now, I will bite my tongue and enjoy our time together away from the pack.

I hadn’t planned on taking her this far out, and I know when Corbin finds out, he’ll be pissed, but right now, I’m prepared to suffer my alpha's wrath in the hopes of seeing her smile again.

Coming to a stop, we exit the car.

This place has always been one of our favorite places. No one ever comes out here. It’s too wild and overgrown for most hikers or hunters, so we didn’t need to worry about being seen or shot when we shifted.

“Are you ready, little wolf?” I smile.

“Always.” She smiles back, and I know her wolf is as excited as mine.

I turn away to give her some privacy as I strip out of my clothes, placing them on the driver's seat to keep them clean.

My shift is quick as I make a break for the trees awaiting my mate.

She doesn’t keep me waiting. Crashing into me in a surprise attack that lets me know I’m off my game.

Growling, I spin around, crouching down, preparing to lunge. Anticipating my move, she backs up a few steps before darting around me as I sail through the air, landing just where she had been. Turning my head to glare at her, she snorts, shaking her head as if laughing before taking off into the trees.

She’s fast, but I'm faster as I catch up to her, nipping at her hind legs playfully. Taking turns, we play this game for thirty minutes before my wolf comes to a stop. A cold shudder runs down my spine as I catch a strange scent in the air around me.

Something isn’t right. I jump back as a flock of birds take flight from a nearby tree, and I growl. We needed to leave. Now.

As Lei lopes back towards me, I tip my head back toward the car.

I can see her disappointment at having to leave so soon, but something is wrong here. I can feel it.

As soon as we return to the car, I still feel on edge. Like we’re being watched. Turning, I scan the tree line, but nothing looks out of place.

“What’s wrong?” Lei asks, concerned.

“Nothing. I forgot I have a few things to do before tonight’s meet, that’s all.” I say, not wanting to worry her.

I turn away, quickly getting dressed before waiting in the car, the hair on the back of my neck standing to attention.

“I’m ready.” she says, dropping into the seat beside me as I slam my foot on the gas.

Chapter Five

LEI

I grip my seat as Riley speeds down the road back to Redwood.

I don’t know what's gotten into him. One minute we were playing, and the next, his whole demeanor changed. Even now, I can see him check his mirror every few seconds as if he expects the cops to come and pull us over, which at this speed is a possibility.

“Are you sure everything's ok?” I ask again.

“Yeah. There's just some stuff I promised Corbin I’d do before the meet tonight. I'm sorry. I wanted to make this special for you, but hey, we got plenty of time now that you’re back, right?” he smiles tightly.
