I cried out to the man I loved in my mind, backing away until I hit a railing.

The asshole wagged his finger, making a tsking sound as he closed the distance.

I struggled harder, ignoring the biting pain. The ropes loosened but not enough. Still, I refused to stop fighting.

“Keep struggling. I do prefer a woman with fight in her. However, that won’t change anything. Minister, prepare to marry us.”

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a flash, my heart racing. When I caught sight of Gabriel, I almost whimpered, giving his presence away. He shifted his gaze in my direction, narrowing his eyes. I sensed he was telling me to stay exactly where I was. As he came closer, I sucked on my bottom lip to keep from crying out.

“Not so fast, you motherfucker. She’s mine.” Gabriel had a calm exterior, totally in control, but I sensed his rage was out of control. His hand was firmly wrapped around his weapon, a smile curling across his lips.

The man laughed. “Not for long.” He moved toward me and I jerked back.

“You won’t survive this, Rick,” Gabriel added. His weapon was in both hands, the look on his face full of determination but as he moved forward, I could tell whatever poison he’d been given was starting to work, his gait unsteady.

I bit back a gasp from hearing Gabriel’s voice. He’d found me. How? I jerked my arms, shocked that I almost managed to yank one hand free. As Gabriel approached, gunfire erupted, the mystery man’s soldiers unable to react in time. As blood was splattered onto the walls, I couldn’t keep from yelping.

As I tugged, twisting my arm, Rick grabbed me, wrapping his arm around my throat.

Stay calm. Keep pulling.

I tried to keep my movements to a minimum as Gabriel continued walking forward, fighting the drug with everything he had.

Rick pressed the barrel to my head just as I managed to pull one hand free.

“Why?” Gabriel asked.

“Because your father killed my wife,” Rick hissed.

Gabriel’s eyes opened wide. “Jesus Christ. All this time you waited for revenge?”

“I wanted every one of you fucking lowlifes to suffer.”

“You had my sister beaten.”

“Yes. I would have done it myself, but you had to think the Morettis were responsible.”

As Gabriel faltered, almost dropping his weapon, several of his soldiers came closer. His chest heaved and there was no doubt his muscles were starting to shut down.

Rick tipped his head, his hold tightening. I risked sliding my hand between my legs, managing to touch the handle of the knife.

“Let her go. You’ll never make it out of here alive.” Even Gabriel’s voice was affected. He needed to get to a hospital, or he would die.

The tension was mounting, the soldiers moving closer.

“Then I’ll die knowing your last breath is watching your lovely fiancée take hers.” After a few seconds, Rick whistled.

And all hell broke loose, enemy soldiers bursting into the room.

Gunfire blasted from every corner, Gabriel’s men dropping and rolling, several falling as soldiers dressed in all black stormed into the church.

Gabriel lunged forward, his roar unlike anything I’d ever hear. It was now or never.

I yanked the knife, twisting and driving the blade into Rick’s stomach. He reared back, loosening his hold and I pitched to the floor, the knife still in my hand.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

The shots were closer. Gasping, I crawled away, scrambling to get to my feet.
