Dressed for a wedding.

“What a beautiful bride,” he said. “And red is definitely your color. I think it’s appropriate for an unholy union. Don’t you?”

“Who the hell are you?”

“Does it really matter?”

“Yes,” I hissed, still fighting with the ropes. The asshole seemed amused that I was bothering.

“Let’s just say over the last few years I’ve gotten very close to your former fiancé.”

“What did you do to him?”

He took a deep breath, holding it in for a few seconds. “Let’s just say his muscles should start to shut down right about now. His organs will be next.”

Oh, my God. Gabriel had been poisoned. The tracker. Oh, God. I no longer felt the weight of the necklace.

“If you’re trying to figure out if your beloved will hunt you down, I had a feeling he’d make certain you were protected in every way possible. You see, I’ve studied him and his entire family for years. I had nothing else to do since his father killed my family.”

“All this for revenge.”

What in the hell was he talking about?

“Revenge is the very sweetest when served cold,” he said, and I could swear he was unraveling.

I bit my lower lip, scanning the area to see how I could run away from him.

“Anyway, the necklace was tossed. Just in case. I’m a thorough man.” He walked even closer. “Have the minister brought in.”

One of his men reacted instantly, moving through another door.

“Now, I was simply going to kill you, but then I realized how beautiful you are, even if you destroyed my plans of killing Gabriel’s brother. Then it all became clear how to hurt him the most. Through your suffering.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The accident. How quickly you forget. Let me refresh your memory. I lured Luciano Giordano out that morning. I told him that Joseph Moretti had placed a hit on his sister. That was all it had taken. Then I was going to have the joy of torturing him before putting a bullet between his eyes. You fucked it up!” His yell was strangled, an indication how deranged he’d become. None of this made any sense.

I remained quiet, uncertain of what to do. His glare remained harsh for a few seconds. Then it became lustful as he dragged his tongue across his lips.

“You’re going to be all mine. Imagine all the filthy things I’m going to do to you. I assure you that when I’m finished, you’ll beg to die, but I won’t allow that to happen. When Gabriel takes his last breath before being dragged to hell, I’m certain he’ll think of you. Once wasn’t enough. Now, I’ve found the ultimate revenge.”

Through his rambling, I realized what he was admitting.

“You killed his fiancée all those years ago?”

He laughed, the sound echoing. “Yes. Did you know she was pregnant?”

That couldn’t be true. Could it?

“Aww. He didn’t tell you that? Well, no matter.” He moved closer, his heated gaze sweeping down my body.

I was sick inside, barely able to keep standing.

The minister was dragged in, his expression one of terror.

“Good. Now we can get on with the ceremony. With any luck, I can show off my new bride before Gabriel fades into the darkness.”

Gabriel. Where are you?
