The nervous voice inside my head had been asking me the same question since he’d disappeared, but not before paying for the dress he’d selected for me. It was all so sudden, his behavior both exciting and terrifying.

“Do you have something to wear?”

I turned to face the dress, exhaling as butterflies formed in my stomach. “He made certain of that.”

“What does that mean?”

I was too embarrassed to tell my own sister I’d fucked him in the middle of a dressing room. That wasn’t polite conversation. “Let’s just say he helped me pick something out.”

“Oh, so you spent most of the afternoon together.”

Fifteen minutes in the coffee shop, thirty inside the boutique. That could be called an afternoon. “Kind of.”

“What’s he like?”

“Tall, dark, and handsome with a hint of danger and a touch of arrogance.”

“Right,” she teased. “Sounds too perfect and you know there are no perfect men.”

He might be damn close, the entire package wrapped up in an expensive suit.

“I’m serious.” I moved to the closet, opening the door and turning on the light. I had two pairs of heels, one far too scuffed to wear. Thank God the black pair was in good condition, albeit not sexy enough in my mind for the dress. “You are on your way, aren’t you?”

“When my baby sister has a date after a bazillion years of celibacy, you bet I’ll be on time.”

“Thanks for rubbing it in.” So I hadn’t allowed a man into my bed since… Hell, I couldn’t remember at this point. Long enough that it was obvious why I’d foregone the vibrator collection in exchange for a real hunk of a man. I giggled, which was also totally unlike me, but it felt good to do so.

She laughed. “What’s a sister for? I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

I ended the call, tossing the phone on my bed. This was still a crazy idea. For all I knew he could be a serial killer and I was his next victim. The clothes and expensive watch could have been a prop. Hell, he could have stolen it from his last victim.

“Dramatic much?” I asked the other version of myself before plopping down on the bed, allowing my pups to jump on me, plying me with licks and kisses. They’d been my constant friends for years. As they started to get rambunctious, I finally pushed them away, laughing as I scratched first one then the other behind the ear. “Time to get dressed.” After a quick shower.

I rushed as much as possible, still struggling into the dress when I heard the knock on my door. As I ran into the living room, the little feet trampling behind me, I started to get anxious. I didn’t know how to date. I had no idea how to act. What did I know about anything a stockbroker might be interested in, let alone a man? I growled as I opened the door, cringing from seeing my sister’s reaction.

“That is one hot mama of a dress. Your date picked that out? Whew, baby.” She fanned her face with her hand before bounding inside.

“Too much?”

“God. It’s perfect. What I wouldn’t give to have your body. It’s funny. I haven’t seen you in anything that shows off your hourglass figure in two years.”

“That’s because I’m always working.”

“Who says a surgeon can’t be sexy?”

I gave her a hard look and closed the door. I had ten minutes to finish. “You know the drill. Enjoy wine. Food. Whatever I might have.”

She lifted a sack I hadn’t noticed she’d brought. “Did you really think I’d find anything edible in your kitchen except for dog food? And I’ve come close to eating it before.”

“Very funny.” But she was right. So was the mystery man. I’d eaten more cheap frozen dinners in the last two years than I could count. I hurried back to the bathroom, doing my best to apply makeup and style my hair.

I hadn’t realized how much time had gone by until Carrie walked to the door of the bathroom, leaning against the doorjamb. “Um, sis. Your date is here.”

That shocked the hell out of me. The dogs hadn’t barked? They barked at almost everyone except for Carrie. Maybe he had a way with animals. That gave him points on the good side.

“I think he drove up in a Maserati. There’s one parked out front.” She pointed to the window and my curiosity got the better of me. As I peered outside into the darkness, the sleek sports car positioned under the streetlights glistened. “How do you know it’s a Maserati?”

“I know my expensive cars,” she teased. “That’s like a four-hundred-thousand-dollar automobile.”
