“What you want no longer matters.”

“What are you going to do?” Why was I bothering to ask?

“It’s simple. You’re going to do everything I demand of you. Then you’re going to become my wife.”

His wife. What? Hold on. Was this some sick kind of joke?

“No. I will not do it.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

As his lips brushed against mine, the same tickling sensations rushed through every cell and muscle just as they’d done before. I wanted to be sickened but desire roared through me, nullifying the fear and hatred. How was that possible?

He crushed his mouth over mine, holding our lips together for several seconds before slipping his tongue inside. He tasted of bourbon and cinnamon, his scent infiltrating every cell. I was lightheaded, butterflies in my stomach, my body betraying me as he explored the darkest parts of my mouth.

I clenched my eyes shut, unable to shove aside the dancing vibrant colors as the hunger increased. While I felt sick inside, I knew the real sickness was how much I remained attracted to him. We’d entered into a toxic tryst that would end badly. Yet my fisted hands clenched around his shirt, my back arching as the kiss became a passionate roar.

I couldn’t control myself, my mind a blur even as electricity rocketed through us. How could this be happening? How could I fall into such a dark abyss?

When he broke the kiss, he nuzzled against my neck, nipping my earlobe. “If you disobey me under any circumstances, you will be punished. If you attempt to escape, I will find you.” He eased back so I could look into his eyes. “And when I do, the kind of punishment I’ll issue will remain with you for a very. Long. Time.”

A lump remained in my throat and for some reason, I searched for any sign of humanity in the man. All I witnessed was the dark veil that had replaced the spark in his eyes, something evil and dangerous. I’d fallen for his blatant seduction, giving him my body as well as my trust.

And I’d fallen for the man himself.

“Take her to your car. Make certain she is unable to escape,” he directed toward the man.

“What about my babies? I will not leave without them. You will not hurt them, or I will kill you. I will find a way.” I was almost hysterical, tears slipping past my lashes.

Gabriel looked over his shoulder at them then sighed. “I may be considered a monster to humans, Sarah, but I will never hurt an animal. Change in plans. Take the dogs with you, Dillon. Make certain they are provided food and water.”

“In your house or the condo, Don Giordano?” Dillon asked.

Don Giordano? Panting, I knew I was losing my mind.

“The house. I think absolute privacy will be needed,” Gabriel answered, laughing hoarsely. “I will handle Doctor Washington myself.”

With that, orders were given, and my world was turned upside down. What would happen from here I couldn’t guess.

But I knew he was right.

They would be the things nightmares were made of.

Gabriel

I waited until Dillon had left with the dogs, standing near the window of her study. I’d been subjected to her sobs as she’d hugged them goodbye, insisting Dillon take the bag she’d packed with him. To her credit, she hadn’t hurled insults or threatened me. It was as if she was accepting her fate.

A better man would feel guilty for destroying her life. But I wasn’t that man. The more time spent accepting my role, the less human I became. That had been my father’s hope all along. I took a sip of my drink, finding it odd the taste was now bitter. When I turned to face her, I could smell her continued fear, now stronger than the earlier desire we’d both shared.

She rubbed the wetness from her eyes, turning around to face me, her expression of rebellion returning. “For the record, I will never give into you willingly again. Not once.”

“That may be true, but it won’t change anything.”

“No, of course it won’t. You’re used to getting what you want. You’ll always be a criminal, a murderer.”

The fact I had yet to commit murder in any capacity wouldn’t matter to her. In her eyes, I’d become an enemy.
