Maybe I was enjoying my new role more than I thought I would.

Now it was time to enjoy what belonged to me.

“Where is she?” I asked Dillon as soon as I entered the house. His expression was unreadable, but I could swear he had amusement in his eyes. That troubled the hell out of me. “I assume you followed my orders.”

“Yes, sir, but Doctor Washington is quite… formidable.” It was obvious he’d chosen his words carefully.

“Meaning what?”

“Meaning I see why you like her.” He backed away, lowering his gaze. “I meant no disrespect.”

“None taken, Dillon.” I started to head past him then stopped. “It’s possible the Morettis will retaliate given my visit to Nico. Make certain the soldiers are on alert. You’re in charge of them now.”

“Mr. Giordano?”

“You heard me. I trust you, Dillon, but don’t take the position lightly. And don’t think that just because you’ve been around a long time I won’t be watching.”

“Never, sir. I remember everything your brother told me about you.”

“Which is?”

“That you were a fair man but brutal when necessary.”

I shook my head. That sounded exactly like something Luciano would say. He’d seen the change in me, the smart, shy kid turning into a sharp, angry man. That’s one reason I’d lost my one chance at having a personal life. I’d been too violent, enjoying being second in command. He’d advised me to use the rage for the good of the family. I’d laughed in his face, coming to blows after a few choice words were said. He’d said something similar to me after we’d bloodied each other’s noses. “You two were friends.”

“I liked to think so, but I worked for him, Mr. Giordano. Just like I work for you. I never crossed the line then and I refuse to now.”

I tipped my head. “Understood. You know that I’m not like my brother. Not at all.”

“I know, but that doesn’t change anything. I will always be loyal to this family for as long as you have me.”

“Did you locate the snitch?”

“Not yet, but I will. You can count on me.”

Somehow, I knew I could. “Have another man watch the house. Hunt down the witness.”

“I’m not certain that is wise.”

“I need the element of surprise at this point. Tomorrow will be a new day. We need to be prepared for anything. I want you on your game. Do you understand me?”

He took a deep breath. “I got it. I’ll have your back.” When he stopped and turned to face me, I could tell something was on his mind.

“What is it?”

“Again, I mean no disrespect, but she’s good for you.”

“How do you know what’s good for me?”

“You forget I was around every time you talked to your brother. I can tell a difference. I know how much you care about her.”

Care wasn’t the word. I was obsessed with her, refusing to consider letting her go. “She’s mine, Dillon. Once she realizes and accepts that, she’ll never want another man again. Besides, if anyone dares to touch her, I’ll kill them with my bare hands.”

He smiled from my words, which made me chuckle.

After he walked out the front door, I armed the security system and headed into the living room. I didn’t want to be disturbed, my cravings for Sarah too intense. Soon, I would have her pert lips wrapped around my cock.
