Huffing, she rolled her eyes. “That’s because it is. You know what’s interesting? I noticed a recent addition to your tattoo collection, only the mark is crude, as if your skin was burned by a white-hot piece of iron. Is that your family crest?”

Nothing escaped her. “Yes.”

“And you allowed that to happen?”

“It’s a—”

“Requirement of the Cosa Nostra,” she interrupted. “How very gauche. Am I to expect such a mark when I’m forced to marry you?”

“The only marks on your skin will be those created from necessary discipline.” My balls were aching, my thoughts turning depraved.

“And the ring?”

I lifted my hand, twisting the piece of jewelry several times. “A nod of respect from an organization.”

“Wow. You’ve come a long way in your desire to be king.”

As soon as I wrapped my hand around her throat, pulling her close, all I could think about was spending time with her. “One day you’ll understand.”

“I doubt it.” She kept her eyes on mine as I lowered my head, drinking in her essence. When I kissed her cheek, she shuddered. Then I released my hold, hating all that I’d become.

“This doesn’t need to be difficult.”

“Just confining, like a prison. Right?” She backed away, shaking her head several times.

While I knew she needed answers and I had to have patience with her, it was waning more and more. “Most people wouldn’t see living in a house by the ocean with people instructed to provide you with everything you need as a prison.”

Sarah threw a glance over her shoulder toward the turbulent ocean outside the window, wrinkling her nose. “No matter how gorgeous the wrapping paper, inside it’s still the same.”

“I’m doing this for your protection.”

“So you’ve said. I believe you’re doing it because you fear I’ll run so far away you’ll never be able to find me.”

I pitched the rest of my coffee, leaving the mug in the sink. As I approached, I shoved my hands into my pockets. “Just for the record. There is nowhere you can run and hide where I won’t find you. That’s the beauty of who and what I am and the people who respond to my every request.”

“Blackmail. Extortion. Of course they’ll do what you ask like good little men. How powerful that must make you feel.”

She pressed her hand against the glass and the simple act was arousing, my cock already aching to take her again. No matter how many times I was inside of her, it was never enough. “What did last night mean to you?”

There was no doubt I’d surprised her with the question. “What did it mean? Nothing. It was sex. Am I attracted to you? Obviously, you know the answer and I hate myself for it.” She closed her eyes, her breathing shallow. “And the worst part of it all is that I never intended on caring about you.”

A single tear slipped past her lashes and when I gathered it with my finger, she pulled away, opening her eyes and staring at me. As I brought the salty bead to my mouth, she watched intently. The taste was just like every other, sweet and sinful.

And forbidden.

“I can give you a good life, Sarah. I can provide you with everything you’ve ever wanted.”

“Let me guess. Trips to exotic locations?”

“Yes, if that’s what you’d like.”

“A shiny brand-new Maserati?”

Chuckling, I nodded.

“How about furs and diamonds?”

“I don’t see you as that kind of woman, but if that’s what you’d enjoy having, then the sky is the limit.”
