“Why?” Maria asked. “What’s going on?”

“Business, sister.”

“Damn it, Gabriel. We’re not children,” Theodora hissed.

“No, but you are in danger, and I’m supposed to protect you. Go to my office, Sarah. Don’t make me ask you again.” Fuck. I was losing it.

“Leave her alone!” Theodora added.

“It’s okay,” Sarah said curtly. She allowed her gaze to fall, concern in her eyes. Then she shook her head as if comprehending what I’d done. “I’ll do what he asks.”

Asks.

She still believed I was asking her?

“No, it’s not,” Maria joined in.

“I can handle him.” Sarah’s voice was filled with defiance.

“You shouldn’t need to,” Theodora retorted. “This isn’t who my brother is.”

I took a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds before addressing her. “Thisiswho I am. This is exactly what I must be. Things have changed. Now I’m in charge and this is the way it’s going to be. The two of you need to go back to your father’s house and stay there.”

“What do you mean stay there?” Maria challenged.

“You heard me. You will not leave the house under any circumstances.”

Sarah shook her head. “You started a war.”

“Yes, my beautiful creature. I did.”

I could see fire in Theodora’s eyes and as she lunged at me, able to slap me across the face, I resisted reacting. Dillon pulled her off, holding her flailing body as she spewed words of hatred.

“You are a fucking asshole, Gabriel. You don’t rule my life, nor do you rule Maria’s or Sarah’s. Get a clue. You’re not God.”

Exhaling, I turned my head in my sister’s direction. “Yes. I. Am.”

The look in their eyes said it all. They would never forget or forgive. So be it if I could manage to keep them alive.

Maria pressed her hand against Sarah’s arm, whispering words that I was able to hear.

“I’m so sorry.”

“I’ll be fine,” Sarah insisted as she walked past me and into the living room, the puppies trailing behind her.

“Dillon. Make certain my sisters arrive safely at their father’s house. Follow them inside.”

“Yes, sir,” he answered. “Come on, ladies.”

Theodora stopped before being pushed out the front door, glaring at me as she’d done so many times. “What happened to you, brother? You used to be a different person. Oh, and the last time I checked, he’s your father too.”

Anger swelled inside, clouding my vision, but the rage was directed toward myself. I’d allowed the situation to get out of hand. I’d fallen into my father’s trap of using force to get what I wanted. When the door was closed with a hard thud, I closed my eyes, rubbing my jaw as I thought about what to say to Sarah.

A flood of emotions jetted through me, most with sharp edges, cutting into my skin. I deserved to feel all the fury and hatred, but my sisters had no idea how much I loathed myself.

As I returned to my office, I noticed how sterile the environment seemed. My beautiful surgeon stood with her arms folded, staring down at the mess I’d created in my fit of rage.

“Who did you kill?” she asked so calmly that it took me aback.
