“A traitor.”

“Says the judge and jury.”

“I caught him on camera at one of my clubs.”

That surprised her. As she lifted her gaze to meet mine, another wave of sadness settled in. “Are you hurt?”

I glanced at my shirt and sighed. “No. However, I’m worried. Information was stolen from me that could have proven detrimental.”

“You really do believe we’re all in danger.”

I walked closer, wanting nothing more than to wrap my arms around her, keeping her close.

And safe.

Did I have the ability to do that?

“Yes, I do. I believe you’ve been made a target.”

“Because you care about me.” Her words were so cold, so indifferent.

“Yes, my beautiful Sarah, I do. The fact it’s known will be used against me.”

“The way of your life.”

“The way of our life.”

She laughed then picked up several papers, shooing the dogs away from the broken glass. Then she grabbed my drink, finishing it off in one gulp. “Do you know what struck me today after spending time with your sisters?”

“What?”

“How normal they seemed. Unaffected. Because they were able to laugh, so was I. I enjoyed spending time with them. Then this. I don’t know why I thought maybe you were changing. Isn’t that ridiculous.”

“I think that’s amazing,” I said honestly. She studied me for several seconds before speaking again.

“I can’t marry you, Gabriel. Even if I said the words and signed the marriage license, which you could force me to do, that won’t make us married in God’s eyes or mine.”

“I assure you that I’ll make it worth your interest. You’ll have your own bank account, credit cards, whatever you need. And as promised, you can go back to your chosen profession, with limitations of course. You can have the wedding of your dreams. Anything you want, anywhere you want.” It was fascinating to me that I would do anything to make her happy.

“Oh, my God. You didn’t listen to me before. Fuck the money. Fuck the nice things. I can’t marry you because I’m afraid of losing myself in you.” She was exasperated, clenching her eyes shut.

“You matter to me, Sarah. I can’t risk your safety under any circumstances. By now, there are very few who don’t know you belong to me.”

“So they’ll use me against you.”

“Yes.”

I had listened to her but in truth, they’d terrified me more than I wanted to admit to myself. She was right. Buying her anything would never matter to her.

Her words were so damn heartfelt that I was blown away. As quickly as love sparkled in her baby blues, the deep emotion was replaced with uncertainty and anger with herself for yet another admittance.

“Plus, I need truthfulness and someone who will share their life, not just try and keep me protected as if I’m too frail to handle the truth.”

“You’re anything but frail, Sarah. You’re the strongest woman I’ve ever met.”

“Then don’t keep me in the dark about your life.”

“There are things that you won’t want to hear.”
