It would seem he didn’t care about his good buddy.

I turned toward Dillon, smirking from the wide grin on his face. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the evidence I’d had him provide. When I handed it to the good mayor, I watched in amusement as he glanced from one photograph to the other. “Pictures are priceless. Don’t you think?” I watched as his face paled. There was more, but I always like to hold the last cards until absolutely necessary.

“You fucking bastard. What the hell do you mean about us being family? You’re a roach, nothing more, and I will crush you under my boot.”

Dillon slammed his hand against William’s chest, pushing him inside. “You need to respect the man, Mayor. He’s going to be your son-in-law.”

I wanted to laugh seeing the look on William’s face. He was mortified instantly, his face turning white. Then I sensed anger replacing surprise.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” he demanded.

I allowed Dillon to continue pushing him all the way into the foyer, waiting until Bruno closed the door before scanning the spacious room. “You’ve certainly done well for yourself, William. I dare say putting pressure on my family has turned into a lucrative way of life for you.”

“You’re crazy. What have you done with my daughter?”

“William. What’s wrong?” The female voice came from the stairs, the woman’s face pensive as she peered down.

“Nothing!” William barked. “Get back upstairs.”

“Your husband and I were having a friendly conversation about your lovely daughter and our upcoming nuptials.” I resisted laughing because I knew the woman had suffered at the hands of the son of a bitch standing in front of me. She didn’t deserve to live the rest of her life treated like she didn’t matter.

“That will never happen!” William shoved his hands against Dillon, pushing him aside. “Get upstairs, Emily. I don’t need to tell you again.”

“Emily. I’ll give you a piece of advice,” I said in passing. “Leave this piece of shit before he ruins the rest of your life. Would you prefer to tell your beautiful wife about how often you’ve cheated as well as the fact you’re in the employ of some desperate and unscrupulous people? Or should I?”

I shifted my gaze toward her and the smug look on her face indicated she already knew what levels her own husband had gone to in order to achieve success.

“Do not hurt my daughter,” she said with the same conviction in her voice I’d heard in Sarah’s.

“I don’t plan on it, Emily. Your daughter is very special, although your husband never seemed to care. You don’t need to be a part of this. Sarah will contact you later with details.”

I wasn’t certain if she was happy or felt vindicated that someone finally shattered their glass house. Either way, she gave her husband a nasty look then headed up the stairs, taking them slowly. Perhaps I’d given her an excuse to take back her life.

“I’ll kill you for this,” William snarled, fisting his hand and taking a step in my direction.

While my two soldiers bristled, prepared to do what was necessary in order to keep him from attacking, they knew I wanted to handle the man and whatever punishment I decided to dole out.

When he threw a punch, I drove him against the wall with enough force a picture crashed to the floor. Then I stood in front of him, staring into his eyes.

“You can try, Mayor, but I assure you that you won’t succeed. Now, here’s how we’re going to play this.”

He threw another punch, connecting with my gut. After yanking out my weapon, I took a step back, pointing it at his temple. I doubted anyone in his household, including his staff of four would come to his rescue. He wasn’t a well-liked man among those who knew him personally.

“You wouldn’t dare,” he managed, although his words were clipped.

“Do you really want to push me? My bride to be wouldn’t appreciate the gesture, at least not at this point in her life. Would you also like for me to tell her about all the filthy things you’ve done with women over the years?”

He panted, longing to place his hands on me but to his credit realizing it wasn’t in his best interest. “Leave… my daughter… alone.”

“No can do, Mayor. She’s mine now. All mine. That means you will have no further influence over her. That also means that your family and mine will forever be connected. Imagine the grandchildren you’ll have. If you play by the rules.”

“What the fuck do you want?”

“It’s simple. Stop harassing my family and embrace our connection. That’s it.”

“That’s never going to happen,” he hissed.

“Then I’m afraid I’ll have to supply everything I’ve learned about you to the proper authorities. I’m certain they’ll find your extracurricular activities of interest. Especially since it’s about time for you to run for reelection.”
