I had erupted into flames myself earlier, so no matter what my instincts said, his fire wasn’t going to kill me.

Calian took off from the ground as his flames circled my wrists, flooding me with a strange, magical heat. The wind whipped against my face, my hair, and my arms, but I didn’t pay it a shred of mind; the magic had me completely and utterly enthralled.

Lian’s fire snaked its way to my shoulder and then over my torso, growing thicker and brighter as it continued to climb over my body.

The world around me flickered whitish blue, and a heady electric charge cut through my body.

My eyes closed, and everything seemed to spin for a moment.

The heat and flames began to die down, then.

The spinning around me seemed to slow, and I found myself relaxing. My hand on Calian’s scales still felt hot, but it also felt right. There was a calmness that accompanied the physical contact, one that I didn’t have a name for.

It almost felt like safety.

Whatever it was, a girl could get addicted to a feeling like that.

I found myself leaning down against his neck, my cheek pressed to his scales as my eyes traced the world below us. The forest was so vibrant and alive, the clouds puffy and swirling in the thick wind blowing past us. It didn’t seem to mind that Calian was creating his own wind; it just kept moving.

The dragon glanced back at me, as if to reassure himself that I was still there and alive, before he soared higher. My heart and magic thrummed within me, and I felt the power growing wilder, the way he’d told me it would if we didn’t seal our bond.It twisted within me, swelling and arching, until I was struggling to breathe.

His voice pierced my mind, a soft but firm stab toward some invisible, undefinable part of me.“Fly with me, mate.”

As if that was the only encouragement it needed, my magic burst into life.

I felt myself slide off Calian’s back as the shift happened. For one heart-wrenching moment, I was free-falling.

Then my wings were spread in the wind, and I was no longer falling.

I was flying.

My heart still pounded, and my head still spun, but now the feelings crowding my mind were ones I’d never known.

Freedom.

Joy.

Peace.

Bliss.

Hope.

The emotions were so strong and thick that my throat was swollen, even in its strange new form.

I had thrown that coin into the fountain and asked the world for a way out, and it had given me something even better.

A second chance at life.

Not just any life, either—a happy life.

If I would’ve been human in that moment, the eyes that I’d spent so many years training not to cry would’ve been watering.

I didn’t have to fight just to survive anymore.

If I wanted to, now, I could live.

Love.
