“Be careful, they’re clingy,” I called to Sunny, as the gigantic fae hauled me to my bedroom. Her laughter made my lips curve upward a bit, even as Lian slammed the door.

He set me down and stared at me with narrowed eyes. “Your humans aren’t monogamists?”

“Most are. Some aren’t. It’s complicated.” I shrugged.

“Should you touch another man, I will fucking destroy him.” Lian’s eyes went silver and got all glowy. “You aremine.”

“Stop. I’m not planning on fucking another fae, alright?” I tossed a hand in the direction the other fae were gathered. “I don’t consider us married, like you do, but I do understand your clinginess and the permanence of our connection. Besides that, I have no desire to touch any of your buddies. So just… stop.”

The glow in his eyes faded slightly.

I finally turned away from him and looked around the room.

Shit.

The blanket and sheets I’d loved were totally roasted. The walls had taken on a blackish hue. The floor was covered in bits of dust that I imagined was something that had been charcoaled. The ceiling had a wide hole in it, and leaves and dirt had already started falling in through the thing.

“Damn,” I mumbled.

The only things that didn’t look at all singed were the fireproof outfits lined up in the closet.

Sadness and irritation engulfed me, and I tried to ignore them as I slid into the closet and tugged one of the sets of black fireproof lingerie over my skin, covering my tits and ass, but not solving my new attitude problem.

I’d loved that room.

It was mine.

And…

Well, it was wrecked.

I pushed hair out of my eyes and shoved my sadness away.

I should’ve expected to lose the fucking place; I always lost everything. Hoping for a different outcome was an utter fucking waste.

My stomach was clenched when I stepped out of the closet and found Calian studying me with narrowed eyes.

If he said something judgy, I was going to fucking go off on him.

“Let’s go,” I growled at him.

There was no point in looking for the door when we had a gigantic fucking hole.

I shifted forms and then launched myself up into the air, tucking my wings in tight before I shot up through the hole. The stone scraped my body hard enough that I smelled a little blood, but I welcomed the pain.

I’d started letting myself get way too comfortable.

Nothing in Vevol was guaranteed any more than it had been on Earth.

Nothing was safe.

Nothing was certain.

Dropping my guard was so fucking stupid. I should never have let Lian touch me, or considered a friendship with benefits for us.

If I was going to survive, the only person I could trust was myself.

“You’re upset,”the dragon said to me, as we flew. He’d taken the lead, and since I didn’t know where we were going, I didn’t try to argue with him about it.
