“My gorgeous mate,”a male voice murmured. The sentence wasn’t spoken aloud, but was somehow in my mind, or within me.

My heartbeat picked up.

“Tell me I did not just hear you in my head,”I shot back.

Lian’s low, gravelly chuckle was the only response I got back.

My wings pumped hard, carrying me into the sky, and my eyes closed as the thick, powerful wind rushed against my face, my burning feathers, and the thick legs hanging below me.

Fuck, there wasnothingas amazing as flying.

“You’re perfect, January.”Lian’s voice touched my mind again.

The words made me shudder, even in my phoenix form.

“Don’t,”I whispered back.“You have no idea who I am or what I’ve done. My life has been very, very different than yours.”

“And yet you fly before me, strong, certain, and powerful. Your past has little to do with your present perfection.”

The pure certainty in his voice was enough to make my chest hurt.“Just stop.”

He didn’t speak again, but through whatever magic connected us, I could somehowfeelhis curiosity about why I was so against his compliments.

We flew the rest of the way in silence. Eventually, I relaxed again, despite the reminders of my past that his words had dredged up.

When he knew the hell I’d survived and the damage I’d done, he would never call me perfect.

My eyes squintedas we approached the Stronghold. The longer I stared at the small gap in the trees, the more I thought I could actually make out the hidden building within.

That was insane—it was invisible.

“You only need to be in tune with the building’s magic to see it, Love,”Calian murmured to me.

My chest clenched.“Don’t fucking call me that.”

His chuckle brushed my mind, and he otherwise didn’t acknowledge my words.

We landed in front of it. While Lian shifted in the air before he landed on two feet, I had to hit the ground and focus on getting myself back into my human form before I managed to shift back.

By the time I was back in my skin, the man’s front was pressed up against my back, his arms around my chest and waist to keep my lady bits out of the sight of the other men around us.

A few of them yelled as Calian ushered me into the building—the door of which opened just in time to let us in.

Sunny slammed the door behind us with an unceremoniousoofand leaned her back against it. She flashed me a wild grin. “This place got so fucking much more exciting when you got here.”

A snort escaped me. “You’re welcome, I guess.”

Her grin widened. “Next time you’re going to have screaming-hot sex with a gigantic fae, mind warning us so we can get out of here? Or taking it back to wherever that bastard lives? I’m all for the sex, but would rather not hear about all the excitement I’m missing.”

My face flushed, and an awkward laugh escaped me. “Sorry. Will do.”

“Don’t apologize for getting some. I wouldn’t say no to hot fae sex myself.” She glanced over her shoulder at the door behind her.

Lian’s arms tightened around me.

She hadn’t clarified which gigantic fae she expected me to be having sex with, which his mind told me he didn’t like one fucking bit.
