Classy, if she was the one making the sacrifice.

Shitty, if she wasn’t.

“Make sure only one of you does it or we’ll be the ones calling a war,” Priel, our hellhound, growled.

The woman dipped her head in a nod. “That’s not going to be a problem.” Her voice was clipped, and from what I had heard, she had a damn good reason for it.

“Is that all?” Lian asked, looking around the room and pulling me closer.

“For now.” The unseelie king still studied us with a heavy, dark gaze.

“January?” The woman spoke up as Lian started to turn me away from everyone, to lead me out in front of him.

I glanced over my shoulder at her, and met her slightly-troubled gaze.

“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice low. “No one’s forced you to do anything?”

My judgment of her was officially leaning toward classy. I’d put money on her being the one to seal the deal with her mate, even if she didn’t want to. A shitty sacrifice, but one I could definitely respect her for making.

“I’m fine. If anyone tried to force me, I’d cut their fucking dick off,” I tossed back.

Her lips curved upward slightly. “We need to get all of the ladies together one of these days.”

“Good luck getting past all these assholes.” I gestured with my head toward the group of male fae flooding the room.

Her lips lifted further as she dipped her head in a nod.

I nodded back before slipping outside, with Lian’s hand still gripping my waist in a comfortingly-possessive way.

“You did better than I could’ve hoped for,”Calian murmured into my head. It had been so long since he spoke to me through the bond that I shuddered a bit at the feel of it.

“Do you guys have meetings like this a lot?”I wondered.“Mostly pointless?”

His chuckle was silent, but his fingers stroked the skin beneath my hip bone.“The unseelie would never admit it, but they have a dramatic streak wider than the damned sky. They attempt to use it to force us to follow them a few times a year.”

Damn.

“So this is just a normal day in Vevol?”He must’ve been able to hear my question, and his lips curved up in response.

“It is. Though usually, one of the unseelies will be bleeding when we leave. They love pissing off Priel.”

My lips formed a small grin.“He seems like he might be just as dramatic as they are.”

“Oh, he is.”Lian shot me a grin that mirrored my own, before he pulled me close and shifted forms.

My magic thrummed too excitedly to protest his hold on me, so when I started to shift, I did so on Calian’s back. He flashed me a sharp-toothed smirk when I almost fell off, unused to balancing my huge-ass bird-self.

“You’re stunning,”he told me, his voice soft and sexy.

“Or are you just stunned?”I countered.

His scaly forehead sort of wrinkled.

“It was a rhetorical question, so I didn’t expect you to answer.”

The wrinkle on his forehead didn’t budge, so I tried to explain.

“It’s like the saying, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder.’ Everyone’s definition of attractive is different, so calling someone or something beautiful is a waste of time. It doesn’t matter if the girl in the cell next to yours is even filthier than you are; what matters is that they were stunned by her. They found her beautiful, and it worked to her advantage. You told me I was stunning, and I replied that in actuality, you were stunned by me.”
