A low chuckle traveled through our bond.“To me, you are the most beautiful thing in both of our worlds. Is that a better compliment?”

The fire on my feathers and wings grew a little hotter. For some reason, it felt nice.“It is.”

“Do you still wish to go to my mountain?”His voice was firm enough that I knew he wanted me to say yes, but soft enough that I knew he wouldn’t be upset if I said no.

There was no pressure either way, which left me with the chance to give him the truth.

“I do,”I admitted.

He flashed me a slow grin over his shoulder, his ginormous teeth glinting a bright white.“I’ll race you there.”

A laugh burst out of me as the dragon rolled sideways, knocking me off his back. My wings spread through the sky, the wind forcing them open as the massive appendages kept me upright.

I glided below Calian for a moment.“Ready?”he asked, his voice a bit wicked.

“Yup.”It was silly—I knew he was going to win, and he did too. But the adrenaline was still there, and the idea still made me ridiculously happy.

As we took off toward his mountain, flying harder than I ever had before, I admitted to myself that for the first time in the entirety of the life I could remember, I was happy.

Eighteen

The thrill had cooledoff by the time we made it back to his cave, and then I was just sort of uncertain.

All of this was new for me. The world, the magic, the mating thing…

He hadn’t known what he wanted from me or with me the last time we’d talked about it, but I was pretty damn sure that had changed.

And now, we were going to be alone in his cave. On his mountain.

I landed beside him, still shifting slower than he did. It would be a long-ass time before I could change as fast as he could, but I didn’t mind.

In fact, I kind of looked forward to it.

When we were both in our skin again, his gaze slowly moved up and down my body. Whether he was checking me out or just checking me for injuries was debatable, but I didn’t want to wonder about it.

“I never had the chance to show you around,” he remarked, lifting his gaze from my chest. “May I?” He held an elbow out to me, and my heart squeezed.

I was totally fucked.

And not just in a fun way, either. Because I wanted to be near him as much as he wanted to be near me, which was kind of terrifying.

I took his elbow anyway, fighting off the wild emotions rummaging in my abdomen.

“You mentioned a cell, before we took to the air,” he said as we walked.

My stomach squeezed further.

This was getting stressful.

I needed to kiss him, or fuck him, or… bail.

The urge was overwhelming, but I ignored it.

“I was in juvie. There was… someone tried to hurt me. I killed them. It wasn’t an accident. It landed me in jail for a few years.” The words tumbled from my lips in short, choppy sentences.

“Your people imprisoned you for protecting yourself?” His voice was low, and I heard anger lining it.

“They thought I could’ve protected myself less violently. I probably could’ve. Really, I only went to jail because the man I killed had been friends with the people who decided whether or not I’d be punished.” My voice was quieter. “I don’t like to think about it. Or talk about it.”
