His eyes flashed at my words.

“However,” I continued, “there is a solution, but I need your approval before I can move forward.”

“And?” he gruffly grunted.

“I’ll have to attend the academy full time, meaning I’d have to sacrifice my time here at the club on the weekends.”

Damien snorted and vehemently shook his head, reacting exactly how I thought he would.

“This is the only way,” I rushed to add before he could throw in a verbal protest. “In order for this to work I have to get close to them, study their strengths, weaknesses, the whole shebang. Without that info, I can’t act, and there’s no way in hell I can pursue them otherwise.”

“Forgive my intrusion,” Finn had then spoke up. I looked over to find his full attention on Damien. “I can see that you don’t approve, but shedoesmake a valid point, Boss. If you consider this, I think you may be able to use this to your advantage.”

Damien’s brows lifted at Finn, as did mine.

What was he doing? Better yet, what the fuck did he mean by that?

“Samara…” Damien’s penetrative gaze slid away from Finn and settled on me. “Give Finn and I a moment to discuss things over. Privately.”

I handed my empty glass over to Finn and rose to my feet, offering Damien the fakest smile I could muster before I stepped out the room. I had no idea what the hell was going on or what Finn meant about using this—as in me staying full time at the academy—to Damien’s advantage. One thing was certain though. Something wasn’t right about this. Finn would’ve never said what he did in the car and then just now in the room with Damien. Maybe I was mistaken and blowing things out of proportion, but it sounded to me like Finn was plotting something. He had to be.

And whatever it was, I was the key.

Chapter 12

Samara

Bysomegraceofa miracle, Damien agreed to temporarily cut me loose from the club. I wasn’t so thrilled at thetemporaryaspect of it, but it was still a huge win on my behalf. I guess I had Finn to thank for that. Whatever was said behind that door, I hadn’t a clue, but I knew if it weren’t for him, Damien would’ve never agreed to this.

Before leaving the club, I was presented with a parting gift from Damien. An extra duffel. It was heavy and I was given strict ordersnotto open its contents until I was back at the academy and all by my lonesome. After Finn dropped me off there, I carefully hauled it to my dorm with my other bags. I unlocked the door and flinched back in horror at what I saw next.

“SKY?!”

She shrieked and jumped off the couch, not bothering to cover her naked body as she rushed to jump in front of some guy who’d cursed and rushed to cover his crotch with his hands.

“What are you doing here!?” she screamed at me.

The view burned my retinas, so I promptly spun around, blinking fast to rid the disturbing images from my mind. “Fuck, Sky. How was I supposed to know that you were—”

“A text or a phone call would’ve been nice,” she hissed, her angry voice fading out as their footfalls darted to her side of the dorm.

“Sorry,” I shouted back, realizing she’d made a good point. The thought never occurred to me to call or shoot her a text.

The sound of her bedroom door slamming shut had me expelling a hard sigh. With the weight of my bags heavy on my shoulders, I sauntered down the hall towards my bedroom, closing and locking the door once I was inside. As gingerly and silently as I could, I deposited my bags on the bed. I barely had time to reach for one of the zippers before three hard knocks banged against my door.

“You get a good view?” Sky snarled. She was fully dressed now, embarrassment stained brightly on her fury-flushed cheeks. In the distance I heard the door to our dorm shut, indicating her booty call had just left.

“I’m so sorry, Sky. I didn’t mean to—”

“Next time,” she sternly cut me off, “call me. How would you feel if I busted in on you getting dicked down?”

“I’m sorry.” That was really all I could say. Sky sighed and reached in to give me a hug.

“You’re forgiven. But seriously, why didn’t you call me and tell me you were coming back? I thought you had to work this weekend.”

“I did,” I replied when she parted from me. “But my boss agreed to give me a temporary leave of absence so I could be here and focus more on my studies.”

“But you’re a waitress,” she spouted with confusion and crinkled brows.
