Chapter 13

Samara

“You’rewearingthat?” Sky asked, wrinkling her nose when I stepped out my room a few hours later. “No offense, Samara, but you look like you’re about to run off and join a satanic cult.”

I’d chosen a pair of dark blue jeans and another band T—Slipknot this time—and of course, my VANS. My black hair was thrown up in a high ponytail and I’d opted to go a little heavier on my makeup than usual. I smirked as Sky continued to eye over my outfit with deep disgust.

“Don’t get me wrong,” she carried on, “you do look nice—hot, actually—but—”

“But what?”

She sighed and irritably shook her head. “I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be the fashion police here. All I’m saying is that if you plan to ever get laid, it wouldn’t hurt to add a little bit of color to your wardrobe every now and then. Or you know, maybe wear a cute dress or something.”

Now it was my turn to wrinkle my nose. “Ew, no thanks. I’m not exactly a dress wearing kind of gal.”

“I can see that. Anyway, I’m about ready to go if you are. How do I look?” She spun in a circle, showing off her baby blue blouse and jean skirt. She added black leggings underneath the skirt with a matching pair of black flats. Her chestnut hair was curled, cascading wildly down her back and shoulders.

I gave her a tight nod of approval. “You look hot.”

She grinned big and excitedly clapped her hands. “Excellent. Now let’s get the fuck outta here. I’m ready to dance and get my drink on.”

We stepped out of our dorm and as Sky locked the door, my eyes couldn’t help but sweep over three girls who were waiting by the elevator. Right away I’d recognized them. It was Kinsley and her two lackeys, Janice and Gretchen.

As if they’d sensed my eyes on them, Kinsley turned first, shooting me a nasty glare when our eyes locked. She mumbled something under her breath I couldn’t hear, but whatever she’d said made her friends cackle and turn their attention to me for a brief moment before the elevator dinged open.

“Just ignore them,” Sky muttered beside me as she looped her arm around mine. “And avoid Kinsley at all costs. She’s been itching to start shit with you ever since those rumors about you and Isaac got spread around.”

“I’m not worried. I can handle myself.”

Let the bitch try something. I already had two blades tucked away in my bra and two more strapped and hidden around my ankles.

After a few minutes of waiting, the elevator opened for us. As we stepped out and Sky began leading me out the front exit, I felt my brows crinkle in confusion.

“Uh, where are we going?”

Sky giggled. “You’ll see.”

Originally, I thought this party was being held on the other side of campus where the boys’ dormitories were located, but I was taken aback when we stepped out the academy’s threshold and began heading for the woods. The sun had set about an hour ago and every where I turned there were the sounds of rustling through the trees and twigs snapping. Unease rushed over me the deeper we went.

“We don’t have to worry about bears or any wild animals out here, do we?”

“Aww,” Sky chuckled, finding the wariness in my tone humoring. “Is someone scared?”

“Of a bear?” I reiterated. “You’re goddamn right I’m scared of bears. Those fuckers are huge and have sharp teeth and claws that can mutilate you and—”

Sky threw her head back as I tightened my grip around her arm, laughing hysterically. “Don’t worry. These woods are bear and wild animal free, except for maybe some owls, squirrels, and other little innocent creatures. I promise you have nothing to worry about.”

Easy for her to say. I may have had my blades, but they wouldn’t do shit to protect me if anything remotely the size of a bear or larger decided to jump out and try to eat me alive.

Finally, we stepped out on what I’d believed to be a walking trail. Sky tugged me along, still giggling at my resistance. How the hell she knew where to go with barely any light to help us along was beyond me. But then I thought about it and began to feel stupid. Sky had been attending school here a lot longer than me. This wasn’t her first time wandering around and about in these woods, I realized.

Music thumped away in the distance. As we trekked further on, Sky squealed, and my eyes shot open wide with a gasp as a huge gulf of flame spawned out of thin air, illuminating a huge clearing where our fellow peers were scattered around dancing and drinking.

“Holy fuck.”

“Come on. I wanna introduce you to my boyfriend. He’s the DJ.”

A yelp burst out of me when she squeezed my hand and tugged, forcing my gaze to tear away from the humongous bonfire. We dodged and weaved through people and eventually found an opening towards a large DJ booth, where a guy wearing a set of headphones was jumping up and down, pumping up the crowd.
