I stopped and kicked the ground, so much rage vibrating through me it made Sky whimper and take a few steps away from me.

This wasn’t part of the plan. I was supposed to keep a low profile.Notattract unwanted attention that could come back to bite me in the ass and make my mission harder to complete.

“Fuck, I’m an idiot.” I downed my cup of beer, the plastic crunching as I fisted it tightly in my hand.

“Just stay here and calm down. I’ll go get you another drink.”

I growled deeply and threw the cup down, gripping my head, shaking it vigorously.

I fucked up. First it was that stupid shit in the dining hall and now this? How the hell was I supposed to figure out how to kill them now when I might’ve just painted even more of a bullseye on my back?

“Samara, are you okay?”

I turned, laying eyes on Rhett, who was gaping serenely at me with his hands in his pockets.

“Oh, fuck off,” I hissed, walking away from him. He grabbed my arm, halting me in my tracks.

“Dance with me,” he offered, his smile fake but yet it seemed genuine at the same time.

“And why would I do that?”

“Because I asked nicely. And it would be wise for you to agree.”

Chapter 14

Rhett

Istaredintoherexploding eyes, tightening my grip on her arm as she made to shove away from me. “Now, Samara,” I voiced darkly, her murky eyes flitting into slits as she glared up at me.

She was amazing. I’d never witnessed anyone valiant enough to challenge Kinsley like that. Her father was Jerimiah Sinclair, ranked number three in Storm Ridge Valley’s most vicious drug lords. It took major balls to stand up to Kinsley. The world was full of surprises and Samara Campbell was the biggest surprise I’d ever crossed paths with.

“Fine.” She tugged her arm away again. I released it, watching as she stalked back to the crowd. I followed behind her, not letting her get too far just in case she tried to make a run for it.

Her friend Sky approached a minute later. She froze, her wide eyes stunned as they volleyed between me and Samara standing side by side.

“Rhett,” she muttered, swallowing hard. “Is something wrong?”

“Not at all,” I replied, flashing her a smile that made her cheeks flush pale. “You remember that favor you owe me?”

“Wh-What about it?”

“This is it.” I nodded to Samara, who scoffed and rolled her eyes, clearly disinterested. “Run along now. Samara will find you when we’re finished.”

Sky opened her mouth, closing it briefly, stricken on what to do. Samara took a cup from Sky’s hand and guzzled it down.

“I’m sorry,” Sky said to her friend, which made Samara scoff again and fire back with some foul words that would’ve made a sailor blush.

“Traitor!” she shouted again as Sky ran off like a mutt with her tail between her legs, growling deeply before her eyes fastened back on mine. “One dance and that’s it.”

I grabbed her hands and pulled her close to me, noting the disgust plastered on her face. My hands met her hips, forcing her body to move against mine to the fast-paced beat. After another moment of resistance, she finally gave in and wrapped her arms around my neck, meeting my rhythm.

“What do you want?”

“I’m here to give you a message. Leave while you still can.”

“What?” She stared up at me like I was insane. “Sorry dude, not happening.”

“It’ll be easier if you submit.”
