“I know what I said, but you and I both know Samara isn’t going to let this go now that she’s caught wind of it. You were right before, Jace, we can’t keep hiding the truth from her. She needs to know. Don’t forget my days here are numbered. Hell, maybe we’ll get lucky, and she can figure out a way to help save me from the next Harvest.”

I looked away from her, sniffling as I brought my hands up, trapping my face in them. This was a horrible idea. Telling Kitten the truth would only bring more pain not only for her, but for all of us. She’d retaliate. Fall off the deep end and spiral down into a deep cataclysm of unhinged rage she’d never come back from. She’d never trust us again, let alone speak to us again once she knew.

But at the same time, Ginger was right. Now that Samara knew about the disappearances, she wouldn’t let it go. The truth would come out eventually. And as much as it butchered me to admit it, it was better she heard it from us rather than find out after she’d completed her final trial, when it would be too late to save her from my father.

“She called me too,” I admitted. I anxiously scratched my fingers through my hair and cursed to myself. “I was a dick, Ginger. I basically told her to fuck off and that I was done with this shit.”

“Oh, Jace.” She scooted closer to me and wrapped her arms around me, resting her head against my shoulder. “Shedoeslove you, you know that, right?”

I rested my head against the side of hers, sighing. “Yeah, I know. It doesn’t matter anymore now. She’ll never admit it to me, and once she finds out the truth, she’ll hate me. I’ll lose her for good.”

“You don’t know that, Jace.” She grabbed my hands, squeezing them tight. “She’s scared. She knows what will happen if your dad finds out. She’s trying to protect you.”

“That’s not her job,” I voiced sternly. “I tried, Ginger. I tried to get her to reason with me. I told her we should run away together. Go somewhere far, far away from this hell-hole. But she shot me down. She doesn’t want this, andI don’t want this for her.I want us to be together, to be happy. I want to marry her, have three or four little spoiled rotten brats running around, and for us to grow old together. I want us to be free from this shit without having to worry about my father hunting us down. It’s just…” I heaved in a breath and curled tighter to my best friend. “Fuck, Ginger, I don’t know what to do anymore.”

“There’s only one thing we really can do at this point.”

I snorted. “Oh yeah, and what’s that?”

“We tell Samara the truth. Then together—me, you, Samara, and Finn—we’ll burn Damien’s whole empire down to the fucking ground.”

I wanted nothing more than to tear this whole place down with my father right alongside it, but Ginger was insane if she thought the four of us could pull something that dangerous off on our own. To take down my father meant we had to go after Crane, Alesi, and Sinclair too. A four person team wouldn’t be enough. We needed an army, an alliance of people who hated my father just as much as we did and who wouldn’t be afraid to get blood on their hands. It was risky, and hell, I was certifiably insane for even considering this, but I think I knew exactly where—or more like who—we should start with.

Chapter 20

Samara

Igotupthenext day feeling more irascible than ever. The conversation with Ginger still played on repeat in my head as I dragged ass over to the closet to fetch this hideous fucking uniform.

Something was terribly wrong. I could feel it deep in my spirit. And whatever it was, I had to wait until Sunday to find out. More and more I found myself suspicious over Damien and his true motives. Of everything and everyone, including Jace and Ginger.

Knowing she was keeping secrets from me and has been for a while, really bent me sideways. Jace too. He and Ginger were best friends. Ginger was only a dancer at the club. She wasn’t involved with the Outlaws, nor did she have any real insight of what went on with them, not like Jace did. Which meant whatever she did know, she’d learned from Jace’s mouth alone. If not him, then Finn had to be the one feeding her info.

Whatever the case, I couldn’t let it interfere with what I had to do. I’d taken advantage of my freedom at the party, which was a mistake I refused to make again. Play time was over. It was time to get serious.

I slid on my heels and after throwing up my hair in a high ponytail, I grabbed my books off my dresser. After cramming them in mycourtesy ofthe schoolSRA backpack, I made my way into the living room. Sky was there, already dressed and in the process of stuffing her own books in her bag.

Three hard knocks came to our door.

Sky looked at me, then to the door, her brows raised. I shrugged, and as Sky opened it, we were both taken aback to find a security guard standing at our doorstep.

“Samara Campbell?” the guy asked, glancing between me and Sky.

“Yeah?” I spoke up.

“Headmaster asked me to deliver this to you.”

Cautiously, I approached the guard and took the page he was offering to me. I stared down at it, feeling the annoyance furrowing through my brows.

“What’s going on?” Sky asked from behind me.

I glanced back up to the doorway to find the guard had already departed. After checking the hall, I shut the door, then turned back to find Sky literally hovering over me, her eyes fixated on the slightly crumpled page in my hand.

“Apparently it’s my new class schedule.”

“What? No way.” Sky took the page from me, her mouth dropping open then closed as she read it over, surprise flashing through her distressed eyes. “This can’t be right. It’s near the end of September. Headmaster Higginsneverapproves any schedule changes this late in the semester. Unless…”

“Unless what?”
